Curtin Radio is a radio station based in Perth, Western Australia. It broadcasts from studios at the Bentley campus of Curtin University. As well as transmitting on FM and as CurtinDG on DAB+, the station also live-streams at their website.

History

The station was formerly known as Curtin Radio 927, and became the state's first community broadcaster on 16 October 1976.[self-published source] It held one of only five special licences granted by the then Minister for the Media, Moss Cass, after he encountered community radio in the US. The station is still officially known as 6NR (6 New Radio), and Curtin University (formerly Western Australian Institute of Technology or just WAIT) continues to hold the licence.

After 26 years of AM broadcasting, the station converted to the FM Band in 2002. It is available in the DAB+ format on digital radio as CurtinDG, streaming services such as iHeartRadio, and live-streams at their website.

According to their website,[citation needed] Curtin Radio has a weekly cumulative listenership in excess of 239,000 people (all ages from 15) and has more than 4000 subscribing members.[citation needed] Curtin Radio also has more than 100 on-air and production volunteers.[citation needed]

Newsroom

A training ground for students who study at the Curtin School of Journalism, Curtin Radio has assisted with producing some of Western Australia's radio and television journalists.[self-published source][self-published source]

The Curtin Radio Newsroom is staffed by a full-time journalist. It is also occasionally staffed by volunteer students, who study at the Curtin School of Journalism and prepare news bulletins. The station has news updates from 6 am to 6 pm each weekday and 6 am to midday on weekends.[citation needed]
