Silverstripe CMS is a free and open source content management system (CMS) and framework for creating and maintaining websites and web applications. It provides an out-of-the-box web-based administration panel and WYSIWYG editor that enables users to make modifications to parts of the website.
Silverstripe CMS is released under the terms of the BSD License.
Silverstripe CMS separates the roles of content authors (who get a rich (AJAX) web-based user interface that omits technical jargon); and website designers/developers (who write code: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP).
This contrasts with CMS products which allow technical website development tasks to be performed within a GUI, and also with programming frameworks which offer no out-of-the-box content authoring application. The Silverstripe CMS approach claims to remove complexity for content authors, and offers more flexibility to developers.
The core of Silverstripe CMS is known as Silverstripe Framework (formerly referred to as "Sapphire"), a PHP web application framework. As with the rest of the platform, it is also written in PHP and takes advantage of its object-oriented design capabilities such as namespacing. The framework provides website developers tools to build and extend silverstripe-based websites using modern programming techniques and patterns, such as the model-view-controller pattern and object-relational mapper.[citation needed]
Silverstripe CMS generates markup using a custom template-language based on W3C HTML5 that offers simple placeholders and conditional logic. Silverstripe CMS is extensible through addons and code customization.

Notable features missing from Silverstripe CMS include:
Silverstripe Addons extend the functionality of Silverstripe CMS by providing modules and themes. Modules such as Keys for Cache and Queued Jobs allow developers to backend the core of the CMS, enabling them to make performance improvements or add custom functionality, while modules such as Elemental and Userforms allow site administrators and publishers to customize the site how they see fit. Themes allow site maintainers to change the look and feel of the CMS, itself.
Addons are available via Packagist, the main repository powering Composer, as free downloads under the BSD license. A few modules are officially supported and maintained by Silverstripe, but the majority are community contributed.
Silverstripe supported another form of extending the site through Widgets. These were small pieces of functionality that were drag-and-dropped into Silverstripe CMS modules (notably, the blog module). Examples of widgets included tag clouds, Flickr photos, or "word of the day". Widgets were a relatively less-used aspect of the platform and, although still supported by the CMS, saw commercial support withdrawn alongside the release of v5.0. With CMS v6.0, all widget-related code was officially removed, rendering widgets unusable.
The Silverstripe CMS themes directory provided a number of community-contributed, freely available themes. However, maintainers eventually announced the decommissioning of the Addons site, which hosted the themes directory, stating that the site currently has "several broken features, [and] report[s] incorrect information for many modules and is running outdated dependencies." The site was ultimately redesigned to contain links to Packagist and ssmods, as well showcases of a few modules and projects.
Silverstripe CMS is a web application, requiring a compatible web server and SQL database. As of version 6.2, the requirements for Silverstripe CMS are as follows:
memory_limit must be at least 48M. The gd or imagick extension for image manipulation and an extension for a database connector is also required.Silverstripe no longer publishes minimum requirements for web servers. Instead, it provides a default .htaccess file for Apache web servers. It also generates Microsoft IIS configurations out of the box. Nginx is also supported but requires manual configuration, and no configuration is provided by default.
Silverstripe CMS is released under the terms of the BSD License. Documentation is available for CMS users and website developers. An online demonstration of the CMS is available as an interactive demo. Two technical reference books on Silverstripe CMS are available in English and one in German.
