Teaching a Child to Walk

Teaching a Child to Walk (c. 1668–1672) is an oil-on-canvas painting by the Dutch painter Pieter de Hooch. It is an example of Dutch Golden Age painting and is part of the collection of the Museum der bildenden Künste, in Leipzig, Germany.


This painting was documented by Hofstede de Groot in 1908, who wrote:

The child is wearing a valhoed, or falling cap, and the same child with a falling cap can be seen in de Hooch's Interior with a Child Feeding a Parrot, while the interior itself was used for another scene with the same child pulling impatiently on the skirt of a maidservant:
