Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/CXT/Pages to review/By language

Update: We now have complete article lists for all languages. Thirty-nine have their own expanded section below (see quick-access bar below). Languages with very few translated articles are assembled together in one table at the end.

For a sortable wikitable of the entire list generated from Cryptic's query/19243, see the Talk page.

Introduction

This is a list of translated article links, grouped by language of the source article. As of 2 June 2017, lists of articles shown for a given language are complete. Some languages also have a (shorter) list of manually tagged articles from prior to that date; those lists are incomplete, but are kept for legacy reasons and also because they retain the CXT/PTR item number, which may be useful in some cases.

The purpose of this list is to facilitate assessment of articles at WP:CXT/PTR in two ways:

  • allows contributors here to find articles translated from their source language of choice, and
  • to facilitate the recruitment of additional editors with expertise in certain languages to assist in the assessment effort for those languages

With regard to the second bullet, template {{X2 review help}} is designed to post an invitation on a potential volunteer editor's talk page, along with a list of 1-5 articles to assess.

This effort has barely begun, but is already starting to bear fruit: all Gujarati articles have now been assessed by native speakers, and efforts are already returning results in fa, hu, and ro, and now also in ar and zh and are ongoing in other languages. But this is very much in the initial stages, and additional help is needed.

Not every language is shown below; ones having very few articles are enumerated at #Languages not yet included.

Translator recruitment and result procedures

The chief goal here is to invite editors with expertise in Asian and other languages, as suggested here to help assess articles in their language(s) of competence. The basic procedure for this is:

  1. Find the section for that language on this page; e.g., #hu Hungarian
  2. Find translators for that language, and add them to the section (e.g. #hu translators)
  3. Choose articles to assess: Choose 2-5 available articles (e.g. #hu articles for each translator, and add mocked up invocations of {{x2 review help}} to the invitations section (e.g., #hu invitations)
  4. Send invitations: Send out invitations: send one invite to each translator. (before you do, verify that they have recent activity, or it's wasted effort)
  5. Collate results: Watch the user talk page, and when results come back, collate them here (thank, and ask if they can do some more), and at CXT/PTR

Note that knowledge of foreign languages is not necessary to carry out any of these steps, so if you can recruit users to come here and be "inviters", please do so! (And add your name to the #Inviters section.

Details below.

Create a new section for a language

Update: This step is completed for all languages having more than a few articles. Languages included are those in the /Template:BL Compact ToC. Those not included are listed here.

Each language has its own section, in order to organize volunteer translators that are proficient in that language, for the purpose of sending invitations to translators with articles to translate, and collating the results that they send back.
  • Generate a section heading for the language below to manage the effort (e.g.: #hu Hungarian or #zh Chinese)
  • copy the translator boilerplate at #See also into the "#xx translators" section.

Build article list

Update: This step is obsolete. No need to do this step anymore, it is already completed, following the database query.

The first step is to build a list of articles that belong to the language in question. You can search for articles with the appropriate regex to match either the full language name ("Bulgarian") or the two-letter code ("bg"), but this is about the language of the original article that was translated into English from the foreign language using the Content Translation tool, so an article with a Hungarian name about a painting of a Hungarian subject hanging in the National Gallery in Budapest might still be tagged "bg" if that's where the article was translated from. (Real example.)

Once you have the list of articles, strip everything but the article title, embed in wikilink brackets, strip embedded underscores, prefix it with an asterisk to bulletize in wiki markup, follow with the CXT/PTR item number (not strictly necessary, but facilitates organization, and is a real time-saver later), and save the list with an H4 section header: ==== bg Bulgarian articles ====. Once that's done, the next step is to find translators who know the language to work on them.

The next step is to find translators skilled in that language and English.

Find translators

Finding translators is not hard, but somewhat tedious and time-consuming. There are several resources which can expedite this, but the basic procedure is:

Criteria for translators

The goal is to find translators, proofreaders, and other editors with:

  • sufficient knowledge of the source language (xx-4, xx-5 or xx-N; xx-3 in a pinch, if very few can be found)
  • excellent or native command of English (en-5 or en-N)
  • recent contributions (not older than 2017, preferably some in the last few days if possible)
  • frequent contributions, if possible
  • it's more important that they're native or highly skilled in English, than native in the foreign language; someone who is ru-3/en-N is much better equipped to assess a Russian article, than someone who is ru-N/en-3.

The last two points are the hardest, and will eliminate most of the editors you find in lists. Some lists seem more stale than others.

The second point (English fluency) is really important; just because somebody is a native Chinese speaker, for example, doesn't mean they can evaluate an article in English wikipedia; lots of native speakers have limited command of English, and it's pointless to ask them to contribute. So try to stick to users with en-5 or en-N, if possible.

How to find them

Not everybody puts {{Babel}} badges on their user page, or lists themselves on Translator Project pages, or in Translator or proofreader categories. If you're having trouble finding people, try mining the contributors to articles with close ties to the language in question. Now that we have unified global login, you can check whether a user on en-wiki has a user page, talk page, or contributions in the other language, just by replacing the "en" in the url for a user page, with the 2- or 3-letter code for the other language. For example: if you go to Jimbo's page at "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jimbo_Wales" and change the en to es you get "es.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jimbo_Wales" and—voila—it goes to Jimbo's Spanish user page. Does he speak Spanish? Apparently not, at least there's no Spanish badge there, though he claims some German according to the de-1 badge. But he's Jimbo, so he has to have a user page everywhere. The real story is at his list of Spanish contributions where it's very clear he is not a Spanish speaker.

Another way to get this information is to look at the user's global user contributions, which will show you what wikis they contribute to. Go to user contributions (at: Special:Contributions/Name_of_User ), and click the Global Contributions link at the bottom of the page to see their last 20 contributions in every wiki. Or, just go to this link: Jimbo's global contributions.

How many translators should I find?

The main issue I've found with finding translators, is the highly skewed distribution in their response pattern, and how much work they do. So your goal in sending out an initial batch of invitations, is not to get lots of results (because you won't), but to find out who is ready to help out. Once you figure that part out, you can send them more articles, and ignore the rest.

In the beginning, I would take 30 articles, and send five to each of six translators, figuring all 30 would get done that way. Not a chance. That would likely end up with just five getting done, or zero; and most would be no-shows.

Even if you think you just need one translator for some language with very few articles, you should send at least five or six invites, because you never know who, if anyone, will respond. The trick is to find that one translator who will keep doing as many articles as you send them. Some will ask for the complete list. If you get a few more who will contribute a handful, so much the better. But the goal is to find the prolific contributor.

The risk in not inviting enough translators, then, is that the golden translator maybe just around the corner. If you invite five translators, maybe it's the sixth one who would've done your whole list, and by only inviting five, you may miss out on that one. It's impossible to predict who's going to be the one, of course, so really your best strategy is to send out lots of invites. Better 20 invites to 20 translators with only 1 or 2 articles each, than four invites with five articles on them.

Most people you send invitations to, even editors with recent contributions, will not respond. Or they will, but they'll be too busy to help. The distribution is highly skewed; if you ask 20 translators, you might get four or five responses, and if you're lucky, 2 or 3 will work on some articles. Of those, they'll do their two or three articles, maybe take three more, and that's that. And one editor will keep asking for more, and do your entire list. That's the one you want to find. (Well, they'll do the whole list, for languages that have a few dozen articles; nobody is going to do all 600 Spanish articles; for that, you really need a lot of translators on board; fortunately, Spanish has more translators on en-wiki than any other language.)

Choose articles to assess

Next we want to send invitations to translators, which have 2-5 articles included in the invitation. This section is about choosing articles for assessment.

What articles to include

As to which articles to include in the invite, the basic principles are these:

  • include articles that still need evaluation
    • not already struck at CXT/PTR
    • not already evaluated by another translator
    • not checked out to some translator for evaluation
  • Important: keep track of what articles are sent to whom

While procedures are evolving, article selection is somewhat complicated for some languages by having two lists of articles: one generated from CXT/PTR one by db query; see #Articles in two lists for details about this.

In addition, as more translators are brought on board, there needs to be a bit more formality to keep everything running smoothly, as we're getting to the point of multiple editors working on the same language (especially in ar, zh and maybe es and others) and sometimes even overlapping on the same article (generally not desirable). So I think we need this increased formality now, at least for some languages. So, I'm recommending use of the {{checking}} template, as a checkout-indicator to mark the articles that go out in an invitation.

You should find articles to send in the "#xx_articles" subsection, under the header "Definitive list" of articles. (Every language has a subsection by this name, regardless if there are one or two lists of articles.)

Some languages have two show/hide lists: the top one is the "incomplete list, from regexp", this was created manually before we had the database-backed list of articles; there may be articles there that were already sent out to translators for assessment, and may even have had results returned. Ultimately, this information should all be merged into the "Definitive list" and the "regexp" lists should disappear, but until they do, you have to check both lists, for those languages that have two lists, to see if an article is out for evaluation already or not, or possibly even already evaluated and struck. So, check the "incomplete list" first, if there is one, and find 2 or 3 articles there that are free (unmarked); then check the "definitive list", same idea. If free in both, the article is not being evaluated yet, and can be sent to a translator for evaluation.

Articles in two lists

While procedures are evolving, some languages have two separate lists, like Bulgarian does, for example. In that case, the top list is entitled "bg incomplete list, from regex against cxt/ptr" and the bottom list, "bg complete list of articles, from query/19243".

In principle, the top list (extracted by a regexp against the manually edited list of 3602 articles at CXT/PTR) should be a proper subset of the bottom list, but since the bottom (or, "Definitive") list was generated under different circumstances, it's not quite the case. Since the top list was created long before the bottom one, any pages that were moved/renamed in between will show the old title in the top one and the new one in the bottom list. Similarly, any articles in the "Definitive" list that do not occur in the list of 3,602 at WP:CXT/PTR may indicate a moved page. Eventually, the two lists will be merged and this will simplify procedures considerably, but for the time being, although it's a bit tedious; the ideal procedure for any language with two lists like that, such as Bulgarian, is this (and it goes fast once you get the hang of it):

  1. Click to show both lists, "Incomplete/regexp" and "Definitive" list.
  2. Pick desired number of unassesed articles from the definitive list, that are not marked up at the top list as "already struck at CXT" or any other marking. For each article selected:
  3. Does an item for this article exist in the list at WP:CXT/PTR?
    • No: inspect the article history to find the page it was moved from
    • Yes, article found at CXT/PTR list. Is it listed there in strikeout type?
      1. Yes: do not assess/do not send to translator. add the {{aye}} symbol on the item in the "Definitive list" to indicate this was struck at CXT/PTR
      2. No: This article is assessable:
        1. Edit the "Definitive list" and add the {{checking}} symbol on the line item for the article (If only one translator for the language, can skip the {{checking}} step, and just add to your to-do list.)
        2. Invite a translator to assess this article (or do it yourself).
        3. Add an entry under WP:CXT/PTR/BL#bg invitations with username and list of articles passed (if you are the only translator, you can skip this, although it's nice to have in case more translators come on board)

Send invitations

Send an invitation to one or more volunteer translator or proofreader to assess articles in language 'xx'

  • Copy the boilerplate invocation of {{X2 review help}} (see #See also) once per translator available
    • Like this: {{subst:X2 review help |LANGUAGE |article1= |article2= |article3= |article4= |article5= }} ~~~~
  • Fill in each skeleton invocation with 1-5 articles chosen from the list; I usually send 2 or 3 in the first invite.
    • I haven't been "checking out" items from the list on invitations, because most invitees don't respond; but once they do, any subsequent items I sent get checked out using {{checking}}
  • Prefix the filled out invocation with {{noping2|UserName}}: and add it to the #xx_invitations section
    • This will make it easier to check for progress, for your "non-pingers" who do stuff, but don't tell you about it; you have to go look
  • for each filled in invocation, paste the markup onto the User talk page (be sure your sig appears at the end or they won't know who to contact when they're done)
    • Note that unlike the unitary and somewhat confusing "strike" operator at CXT/PTR, volunteers are requested in the invitation to use {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} tags (or any unambiguous marking like 'good'/'bad')

So, let's say you found four articles that are not being evaluated yet, and you want to send them to two users. You create two invitations (see #Cut-paste) like this:

  • {{subst:X2 review help |Klingon |article1=Stovokor |article2=Worf}} ~~~~
  • {{subst:X2 review help |Klingon |article1=Marc Okrand |article2=Martok}} ~~~~

Paste one invitation onto the end of each User talk page (no header needed, the template will create one), and add an edit summary like, "Can you help evaluating translations from Klingon", and click Show preview. In the preview, make sure the article links are blue, and are well formed. Make sure your signature is at the end, or there will be no way to get results back. If all looks good, click Save. Make sure you send different articles to each user.

Record the invites in the Invitation subsection (#kl_invitations); put who you sent it to, when, and what language & articles. You could just do it very informally, like this:

I prefer to paste the invitation itself (inside <nowiki> tags, of course), preceded by username and timestamp, like this:

But whatever way keeps it straight for you and other inviters, what aricles were sent to whom, is good enough. Then record them in the definitive article list, using the {{checking}} template, like this:

That way, if you (or another inviter) wants to assign Klingon articles to some more users, they won't pick ones that are already out for assessment.

When results come back from a user, collate them back into the list above.

Non response

What about non-responders? We don't want to nag anyone of course, and people have plenty of reasons for not responding, and we don't have to know why. My sense is, that a certain percentage of editors do not appreciate templated requests, and will not respond for that reason alone, even if otherwise willing to help. So, I go back to my list about a week or ten days after sending out a batch of invites, and I check the talk page of the non-responders. If there is other activity on the page more recent than the invitation sent earlier, then I add a brief, one-sentence response to the invitation in my own words, e.g.: "May I assume you're not interested right now, so I can invite someone else to have a look at these two?" or something similar. Add a timestamped "Followed up" or similar comment to the bullet item invitation in the "xx_invitations" section.

If they don't respond to that overture after a week or so, then add "No response". Also strike their name in the translator list. (Don't remove it from the list, because then a coworker could think they "found a new translator", add it back, and send invitations, all a waste of time. Strike it instead.)

Collate results

Collating results returned by volunteer translator/editors is a two-step process involving merging the results back to this page, then to WP:CXT/PTR.

Quick version:

  1. Watch the user-translator's Talk page, and wait for results (they should ping you, but might not)
  2. Add a line item to "#xx results" summarizing results; e.g., "00:24 Jan 1 2525: User:DZager returned 5 results"
  3. Copy each result (normalized to {{pass}} or {{fail}}) onto the line item in the "xx_articles" subsection
  4. Propagate those results to CXT/PTR (see below for why the step above and this one are both needed)
  5. Nice-to-do: Thank the user: just once, either their most substantive change, or on their talk page (or both)
  6. Nice-to-do: Ask the user if you can send them another five (or however many) articles

First, make sure you're watching the talk page of the user to whom you sent the invitation. The template-generated instructions ask them to {{ping}} you, but not everyone remembers, and not everyone knows what ping is, or how to use it. Note: at least two users have added their assessments to the talk pages of the articles, so if you can't find their assessments, check there.

When the results come back, add one line item to the "xx results" subsection, and then merge the user's reported results into the appropriate "xx_articles" language list in the xx language section, summarizing if necessary, and standardizing to use {{Pass}} or {{Fail}} tokens, if the editor used "good"/"bad" or some other system.

Then, copy the results from here, to the CXT/PTR list. The reason that this is a two-step system, is to retain control of which articles have been done and which haven't. If you collate translator results directly to CXT/PTR and skip this page, then you won't know when you are done, or when you should send some articles to another volunteer, if you are not getting any feedback. So please collate here first, then to CXT/PTR.

One nice-to-do, is to Thank the user, using WMF's WP:THANK feature. Some users are editing the articles they were invited to, to fix up translation or other problems. In this case, the article names will show up in the user's edit history. Rather than sending them 5 thanks, just find the one that seems to be the most substantive, and thank them once. If the user didn't edit any of their articles but just assessed them, then you can thank in plain text on their talk page.

The other nice-to-do, is to ask the user if you can send another N articles.

Details for copy and propagate results steps

  • Merge the user's assessment results back to the appropriate language section on this page
    1. Copy or summarize the user's response into the "xx articles" section, add your sig, preceded by "on behalf of User xyz"
    2. Thank the user for their efforts. If they seem open to it, ask if you can send them a few more articles for assessment.
    3. Note: Convert user's response to Pass/Fail tags if different, and copy the rest of their comments or other response verbatim (or summarize, if too long)
  • Merge results from this page back into WP:CXT/PTR.
    1. On the numbered item line, put: "Pass (or, 'fail'): <copy or summary of user comments here> strike (or, 'kill') on behalf of user SomeUserID. ~~~~"
    2. Suggested edit summary for one "Pass" item: "Struck #3190 [[Lal Qila]] per ar translator user." ('ar' for 'Arabic'; or spell out language name if desired)
    3. Suggested edit summary for one "Fail" item: "Kill #3190 [[Lal Qila]] per ar volunteer."

es articles

This is the definitive list of 670 articles tagged "es" in the database with ContentTranslation tag. Note that some of these have already been struck at WP:CXT/PTR; that doesn't mean you shouldn't evaluate them, some are struck by monolinguals (for example, short stubs) and could be reviewed, but if already assessed by a translator there's no reason to duplicate work. Spanish articles on CXT/PTR which are red-linked, will not appear here, because the query does not pick up deleted articles, so every link should be blue, with the exception of any article deleted in the last hour or so.

Inviters

Come help us recruit new translators/proofreaders to this project! Please add your information below if you are already recruiting (or would like to recruit) translators (no knowledge of foreign languages is required):

French currently not a priority as I am fr-n or fr-5 depending on the topic; we do have people interested, perhaps, in catalan. Spanish is a need primarily because of sheer volume, not sure if we have a native speaker for reviews right now. At this moment we do not have anybody doing ukranian, russian, Turkish, Azeri or Polish Elinruby (talk) 22:21, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There are other things to do here, besides recruit translators and watch results. Major contributors:

  • Cryptic (talk · contribs) - cross-connecting old and new lists, updating results, propagating to CXT/PTR, and general SQL wizard

User responses

Suggested posts to users

  • When USER RESPONDED and all their samples are assessed already by someone else:
::Since I wrote, these articles have been assessed by another editor. There will probably be more to look at later, and when I have them, I will see if you're interested at that point. Thanks again, and happy editing! ~~~~
Edit Summary: Thanks; these have been assessed; will check back when we have more.
  • When USER DID NOT RESPOND and all their samples assessed already by someone else:
:These articles have since been assessed by another editor. There will probably be more to look at later. If you're interested, let me know, and I will send you some new ones at that point. Thanks, and happy editing! ~~~~
Edit Summary: These have been assessed.
  • When USER DID NOT RESPOND and some of their samples already assessed:
:Hi again; since the last mesage, some of these articles have since been assessed by another editor. I've struck those off the list, but the others are still open. If you're available to look at the remaining ones, please let me know. Thanks, ~~~~
Edit Summary: List updated.

Search & regex

  • Search CXT/PTR for items belonging to a particular language (Bulgarian used as example):
    • Get the whole line: ^(.*(?:bg;|Bulgarian).*)$ with ^$ match at line breaks
    • Get bracketed title only: ^\|.*?(\[\[[^]]+\]\]).*(?:\bbg\b|Bulgarian|Bulgaria.svg).*$
