- Propose renaming Category:Military personnel killed in action to TO BE DETERMINED
- Nominator's rationale: The title is misleading as the category's description indicates that it includes not only military personnel killed in action but also those who died of wounds sustained during combat. Moreover, it seems unnecessary to categorize separately those who died on the battlefield versus those who died from wounds sustained in battle after reaching a medical facility. Perhaps a more accurate title would be Category:Military personnel killed in combat...? A second issue to consider is whether to include personnel who died of non-combat causes, such as disease, while participating in a war. (WikiProject Military history notified using {{cfd-notify}}.) –BLACK FALCON (TALK) 20:45, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- "Killed in combat" wouldn't cover post-combat death of wounds either, I think. Something very broad like "military personnel killed in wartime" might work, but then we'd need to consider whether we want to include or exclude edge cases like commanders assassinated (outside of actual combat) during wartime, soldiers executed by a court-martial, and so forth. Kirill [talk] [pf] 21:44, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Category:Military personnel with combat-related deaths maybe? The "with" is kind of an odd construction but does the rest of the suggestion move us closer? Otto4711 (talk) 07:16, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Casualty would be better as it covers those who died of illness etc. Casualty is used by Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Category:Military casualties? Twiceuponatime (talk) 08:27, 8 September 2009 (UTC) Sorry, I withdraw that - I should have read the description in the category. The cat covers those who died in action, or of wounds from action. That means it disregards those who died of illness. Twiceuponatime (talk) 08:33, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]- Keep -- Those who died of disease certainly do not count as KIA. The US uses this term, and I would suggest that the category should follow the definition given in the first paragraph of killed in action. This covers both those killed literally on the battlefield, and also those who subsequently die of their wounds. It would thus exclude the large number of British troops who died of disease on the Boer War and deaths from malaria in the Burmese campaigns of WWII. KIA is the recognised term. Though "killed due to combat" might be more accurate, I think we should stick with what we have. We may need a sister category for those who died of disease on campaign. - Category:College houses of the University of Chicago (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Nominator's rationale: Delete. Redundant category. Simply put, no college house of the University of Chicago has its own article, and so there is no need for this category. - Propose renaming Category:Journalists killed while covering the war in Afghanistan to Category:Journalists killed while covering the War in Afghanistan (2001–present)
- Nominator's rationale: The category description claims that the category "covers the Afghan Civil War, the Soviet war in Afghanistan and the War in Afghanistan (2001–present)", but we should not mix categories for different military conflicts. In any case, all of the journalists in this category were killed in late 2001 or thereafter, so they all died while covering the War in Afghanistan (2001–present). Note that my proposal does not involve using an en dash after "2001", even though the parent category does include an en dash, since past CfD discussions suggest that there is no consensus to use en dashes in category titles instead of regular dashes; see related CfD 2009 Aug 28 and related discussion at Wikipedia talk:Categories for discussion#Dashes in category names. –BLACK FALCON (TALK) 00:11, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- Category:Nonwar armed confrontations (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Nominator's rationale: The scope of this category is much too broad for it to be a viable grouping. A "nonwar armed confrontation" could be understood to refer to "an armed confrontation other than a war"—a definition which would encompass even events that take place in the context of a war, such as individual battles—or "an armed confrontation outside the context of a war".
While the second definition is not quite as broad, it still would be too encompassing as it would include basically any armed confrontation (violent and non-violent) that takes place outside the context of a declared war or in which both sides are not formal militaries. So, it would include: riots, protests (even if protesters are unarmed, the police often are armed), law enforcement raids, shootouts between law enforcement and criminal elements, gang shootings, massacres of civilians, internal conflict that does not rise the to level of war (such as low-level insurgency), hostage crises, domestic disputes involving weapons, armed robberies, gunfights, armed repression by a state's security forces, and a host of other events whose only similarity is that they involved weapons outside the context of a war. (Category creator notified using {{cfd-notify}}.) –BLACK FALCON (TALK) 00:01, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete (was Comment): I think {subst:cfr-speedy|new name} would be appropriate to new name "Law enforcement actions." Those which are not can be moved in appropriate categories, if they are not already, like riots, pogroms and massacres. Many of them are such actions and I don't see a relevant category. If there is one, do tell. CarolMooreDC (talk) 01:03, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes, I think the current category as is is much too vague and ill-defined. I think I'd prefer to see Category:Shootouts, Category:Police shootouts or some such as a sub-category to Category:Law enforcement operations, the appropriate crime category as well as Category:Conflicts, with the category contents that don't fit in shootouts upmerged, until such time as new confrontational categories are created. I could be convinced otherwise, though. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 15:06, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment -- This is an thoroughly unsatisfactory category. The Malayan Emergency of the 1950s was technically not a war, because the British government did not to pay war wages to its soldiers, but would come in this category. What we have is a mixture of shootouts pogroms (massacres), etc. etc. This category covers a multitude of conflicts, and if fully populated would need to be split. So why not split it at once and then delete what remains? Peterkingiron (talk) 19:01, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I see above category like I suggested exists. And there is a Category:Guerrilla wars for Malayan Emergency. Other relevant categories are Category:Military operations Category:Military operations by type for things like 2009 refugee crisis in Pakistan. Also there is a Template:Infobox civilian attack, so why not a Category:civilian attack?? Let's put things that obviously belong in better categories in them (or just remove this one where already specfically categorized, as I am doing now) and then see what's left. CarolMooreDC (talk) 00:50, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I think that a category for attacks on civilians, which is what Template:Infobox civilian attack covers, would be too broad, since it would mix together terrorist attacks, criminal attacks, attacks during wartime, and so on.
Of the articles remaining in the category (those that were removed were mainly about American Old West gunfights, pogroms, massacres, and sieges by law enforcement), at least three can be described as shootouts involving law enforcement: 1986 FBI Miami shootout, Norco shootout, and North Hollywood shootout. The Asama-Sansō incident was a hostage crisis and police siege (already in Category:Hostage taking), the Siege of Lal Masjid was an internal military operation (already in Category:Operations involving Pakistani special forces), the Tutt-Everett War was a long-running feud, and I'm not sure how to classify the Yasilova incident. –BLACK FALCON (TALK) 02:14, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete this cat is nonsensical. Some of the articles are about crimes one of the articles (Soapy Smith) didn't belong as the events took place during the Spanish - American War. L0b0t (talk) 14:15, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
