- Nominator's rationale: Redundant to Category:Taiwan Strait, which all of the boundary between actual PRC- and ROC-controlled territory, and obvious POV naming issues. CaradhrasAiguo (leave language) 18:23, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Redirect rather than delete, as it is part of an established tree. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:42, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- In the mainspace, all the redirects are variations of the name (Taiwan, Formosa, Fujian) and do not by themselves imply any bilateral aspect. CaradhrasAiguo (leave language) 19:04, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

- Category:People with Erdős number 5 (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- Category:People with Erdős number 6 (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
- and its subcategories
- Nominator's rationale: This category and its subcategories are newly created as categories for people, listing them by their Erdős numbers. It is non-defining (only important enough to list in a biographical article at all for close collaborators of Erdős with number=1, and usually not even then, certainly not in the lead), variable (it can change whenever any of the listed people publishes an article with a new collaborator with a lower number), requires original research to calculate (there is a reasonably-accurate database of people with number=2, and the American Mathematical Society has a web site that calculates short paths that go only through papers that it lists, but beyond that you have to do it through your own searching), and likely inaccurate. It is better handled by a list, not a category, and that list exists (limited to number=3). If the people are removed from its subcategories, only the article on Erdős numbers and the list would remain, failing WP:SMALLCAT. —David Eppstein (talk) 17:08, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Delete, trivial and non-defining characteristic. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:19, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Delete Non-defining, likely to be variable, and better handled by List of people by Erdős number. Comparing that list with these subcategories (7 pages, 5 pages, 5 pages, ...) it seems that nobody is that interested in using the categories or keeping them up to date, anyway. XOR'easter (talk) 17:35, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- They're small because they're new. —David Eppstein (talk) 18:04, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Delete the subcats should also be nominated as trivia as well. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:16, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Fair point. Deleting the parent category does not make sense when we do not delete the subcategories too. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:38, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry, I intended that as part of the nomination. I've added them to the listing but if the format of that needs correction please go ahead and do that. —David Eppstein (talk) 18:42, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Fair point. Deleting the parent category does not make sense when we do not delete the subcategories too. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:38, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Delete Trivial really. Solomon7968 08:02, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
- Delete Trivial & non-defining. Hell, I've got an Erdős number of 5 and it hasn't got me anywhere. Grutness...wha? 07:04, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- DElete -- seems trivial to me. Possibly listify. Peterkingiron (talk) 14:38, 5 September 2020 (UTC)
- The list already exists, so no additional listification is needed. —David Eppstein (talk) 05:45, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
- Delete. It's kind of interesting trivia, but it's not a WP:DEFINING characteristic of people for the purposes of justifying categories. And furthermore, as new literature in this subject area gets published all the time, it may be entirely possible for a person's Erdős ranking to change — but the likelihood that we'd actually be on the ball about promptly recategorizing people when that happens is pretty low, which is a maintainability problem. - Convert Category:Animated films featuring female antagonists to article List of animated films featuring female antagonists
- Nominator's rationale: The use of terms such as protagonist and antagonist has been contentious in the past, to the point that WP:PROTAGONIST was created as a way of addressing original research concerns. Converting this category into a list will allow sources to be provided clearly establishing that the film belongs as a member of the list. DonIago (talk) 17:05, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Cities in Northern Ireland by county and sub-categories

- Nominator's rationale: This and its four sub-categories have just been created, and only serve to make navigation much more difficult. Category:Cities in Northern Ireland did the job perfectly well, since Northern Ireland only has five cities.
I guess the nomination might technically be an up-merge back into Category:Cities in Northern Ireland, this isn't really my area.Strike through, categories were added, none removed. FDW777 (talk) 14:01, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

- Oppose I am not sure how this made navigation much more difficult. Some of the articles had links to towns in x categories and some not. I was under the impression that cities should not go into towns in x because they are not cities. I would be happy if the towns in x categories were renamed to towns and cities in x. That way it is clear that the cities really do belong in the category. Category:Cities in Northern Ireland has been unaltered and in any case 2 cities are missing. I believe I have merely added an extra way to navigate to the cities. In Category:Populated places in Northern Ireland there is a category Category:Towns and villages in Northern Ireland by county in the other 3 countries in the UK this category is named Populated places in x. Maybe this category should be renamed Category:Populated Places in Northern Ireland by county to make it the same as the others. I don't mind much, but after trying to tidy the place up (for all of the UK) I would like a proper solution and not simply delete these categories just because you do not like them. Op47 (talk) 20:31, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Picking one category from the existing tree at random, Category:Villages in County Down contains 93 articles, so clicking the category from, for example, Loughinisland takes you to a big, populated category where you can navigate to other villages in the county. If you are on the page Derry and click the category Category:Cities in County Londonderry, that's the only article in the category. From that category with only one article in, you could navigate to the following categories.
- Category:Geography of County Londonderry contains articles
- Category:Cities in Northern Ireland by county is a container category with no articles
- Category:Towns and villages in Northern Ireland by county is a container category with no articles
- Category:Towns and villages in Ireland by county is a container category with no articles
- But if the intent is to aid the reader, they would be far better off starting at Derry, where they could then click Category:County Londonderry (which contains 13 articles and 15 categories), one of those categories being the already mentioned Category:Geography of County Londonderry. Directing the reader into a navigation tree with lots of small categories and container categories containing no articles isn't helpful for navigation. FDW777 (talk) 08:10, 1 September 2020 (UTC)

- Delete a clear case of WP:SMALLCAT grouping them in cities in Northern Ireland and Towns in County X (or similar) seems perfectly sufficient since
each of the 7 cities are in different countiesand a category with78 pages is perfectly small enough not to need sub dividing, yes we usually do categorize by county but not in cases where each only has 1. Crouch, Swale (talk) 08:56, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Crouch, Swale: while seven is a reasonable assumption on a quick glance at the categories there are only five cities, two are in more than one county. FDW777 (talk) 09:09, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
- Merge to Category:Cities in Northern Ireland. In UK and NI, a place is only a city if it has a royal charter as a city. There are thus too few to need dividing. All the cities should also be in the relevant "Populated places in County Foo", which is the format that was adopted perhaps a decade ago to get around the question of where the boundary between hamlet/village/town/city lies. I would support moving Category:Towns and villages in Northern Ireland by county to Category:Populated Places in Northern Ireland by county for consistency. Peterkingiron (talk) 14:46, 5 September 2020 (UTC)
- Delete and merge are effectively the same in this case, because the cities are already in Category:Cities in Northern Ireland. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:43, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

- Propose renaming Category:19th century in Egypt to Category:19th century in Ottoman Egypt
- Nominator's rationale: to match parent category:centuries in Ottoman Egypt and article Ottoman Egypt and in parallel with the reconstruction of category:Centuries in Ottoman Syria tree per [1]. We have already renamed early CE centuries in Roman Egypt into an according categories of category:centuries in Roman Egypt - see Roman Egypt categories rename (2017).GreyShark (dibra) 07:41, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

Category:Films released during the COVID-19 pandemic

- The result of the discussion was: delete. MER-C 18:52, 9 September 2020 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: I don't feel like this is a notable categorization to have, in the context of the pandemic. We already have appropriate ones for films postponed and those that altered their release plans from theaters to VOD, but I don't see the need for this category. They would just be 2020 films included in Category:2020 films. - Favre1fan93 (talk) 03:23, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Delete. So far the pandemic is roughly contemporaneous with the year 2020, and the films released during this time do not otherwise have some characteristic which relates to the period of the pandemic. BD2412 T 04:20, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Delete During this COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen films being released on OTT platforms which make sense as filmmakers can't keep their films on stock for a long time. I don't think there is a need to have a separate category like this. Abishe (talk) 15:59, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Support The reason why I created it is because there was a keyword from IMDb called "film released during covid 19", so I felt like creating the category. Besides, who knows how long the COVID-19 pandemic will go? And Unhinged, The New Mutants, Bill & Ted Face the Music, Peninsula, and Tenet are the first movies to be released during the pandemic. Ebb1993 (talk)
- Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:32, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Delete I don't think we have films released during ... categories (WWI, WWII, the Thatcher years, whatever overarching event that tickles the subjective fancy). And we ought not. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:18, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. I don't see this being needed anywhere other than to point out that they released during a large-scale event, which as mentioned above, isn't used for others. It's more notable for films that were delayed or postponed in some way, especially since it isn't being used to cover video on demand or home video releases. Trailblazer101 (talk) 20:25, 31 August 2020 (UTC)

- Delete; even if the pandemic goes beyond 2020, it's not worth the category any more than "films released during World War II". -BRAINULATOR9 (TALK) 20:50, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
- Delete. I can sort of see a case for Tenet being defined by this, given its marketing strategy — but I don't see as readily how it defines the other two films, or the films that haven't been included here, or the films that are getting released through the online versions of film festivals. There's no rule that we have to do something just because IMDb did it — in fact, in many cases (like backward filmographies), what IMDb does is a pretty damn good guide to exactly what Wikipedia shouldn't do. The category system is not just a tool for creating lists of just any random characteristic shared by two or more topics — we categorize articles by their defining characteristics, not just on every individual bit of production or release trivia that it's possible to mention.
