Intermediate category layers like this are a helpful part of the category tree which allow multiple navigational paths in the category tree. After the merge, you can go straight from Faraizi movement to the 4 other articles in Category:19th century in Islam. And when you are also interested in mosques you can still dive into the 19th-century mosques subcategory. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:49, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

All you achieve by removing these categories is to remove a navigational path. None of the paths which remain becomes any shorter.

  • @BrownHairedGirl: there is definitely a gain in navigational path. Suppose someone is at Faraizi movement and you want to find articles about Islam in the same period.
The current path is Faraizi movement -> Category:1810s in Islam -> Category:19th-century Islam -> Timeline of 19th-century Muslim history.
After the merge the path will become Faraizi movement -> Category:19th-century Islam -> Timeline of 19th-century Muslim history.
In the current situation an inexperienced user may even quickly give up after not finding any other article in Category:1810s in Islam which is a situation that will not happen after the merge.
The path becomes even longer in the current situation when they also want to read the articles in the 1880s and 1890s subcats, but after the merge the path to the 1880s and 1890s articles will stay short:
The current path is Faraizi movement -> Category:1810s in Islam -> Category:19th-century Islam -> Category:1880s in Islam -> Ahmadiyya.
After the merge the path will become Faraizi movement -> Category:19th-century Islam -> Ahmadiyya.
On the other hand, when someone is at a mosque and is interested in mosques built in the same period, nothing will change (i.e. nothing will become worse) after the merge.
For example Dzhumaya Mosque -> Category:Mosques completed in 1364 -> Category:Mosques completed in the 1370s -> Category:Mosques completed in 1370 -> Chaqchan Mosque (which is quite a long way for that matter).

  • @Marcocapelle, that's a misrepresentation, because you omit lateral navigation between the decade categories. There is no need to step back to the century category when you can go directly from one decade to another.
One of the examples you cite is: Faraizi movement -> Category:1810s in Islam -> Category:19th-century Islam -> Category:1880s in Islam -> Ahmadiyya.
But the actual path is one step shorter: Faraizi movement -> Category:1810s in Islam -> Category:19th-century Islam -> Category:1880s in Islam -> Ahmadiyya.
This is the issue that you consistently miss about chronology categories now that we have the 2-row version of {{Navseasoncats}} (i.e. {{Navseasoncats with decades below year}} and {{Navseasoncats with centuries below decade}}): that each category links directly to up to 21 other chronology categories. You describe the category tree as if the only navigation possible was from between a parent category and its subcat ... but I and several other editors have done masses of work over the last few years to ensure that this is no longer that case. So the "efficiency" gain which you claim is a thing of the past.
You do have a point about the distance to the by-century timeline articles, e.g. Timeline of 19th-century Muslim history.
