Category:Film Festivals cancelled due to the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic
- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: Delete Timrollpickering (Talk) 14:33, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Category of uncertain value. Literally none of the film festivals being categorized here are in the narrow tier of top-level film festivals (Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, etc.) for which we actually maintain a separate article about each year's individual event — for all of them, we simply have one broad concept article about the overall festival, so it's far less clear that this would actually be a WP:DEFINING characteristic of the festivals. If we had an article that was specifically about the 2020 San Diego Asian Film Festival, for example, then it would clearly be a defining characteristic of that — but if we have just one article about the festival in general rather than separate articles about each year's running, then it's far less clear that having been cancelled one year out of 20 would be defining of the overall organization. And furthermore, the one festival here that I can speak about with some authority (y'all who know me can reasonably guess) has not been cancelled, but merely postponed, and is currently planned to be held later in the year once everything gets back to normal (though of course that may change if normal takes longer to return, but as of today the word is still merely "postponed" rather than "cancelled"). So these events could certainly be listed in List of major events affected by the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic, but it's far less clear that having a category for them would be warranted. Bearcat (talk) 23:43, 13 March 2020 (UTC)\
Keep: They are film festivals. They were cancelled due to the 2019-2020 coronavirus pandemic. Proposer may be unclear about whether the category is valuable enough to be created. Proposer seems equally unclear about whether and why it should be deleted. Kire1975 (talk) 01:55, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not "unclear" about anything; I have a completely correct and accurate understanding of how our category system works. We categorize topics on their WP:DEFINING characteristics, not on every characteristic they happen to have — so if we had an article that was specifically about the 2020 iteration of any of these festivals in particular, then it would certainly be defined by having been cancelled, but if all we have is one article that encompasses the festival's entire history in 2000 and 2001 and 2002 and 2003 and 2004 and on and on and on through 2020 into 2021 and 2022 and 2023 and 2059, then the festival's entire history is not "defined" by the fact that it was cancelled once. Bearcat (talk) 02:10, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- Do any of the characteristics in the category fall within any of the forms of overcategorization mentioned on WP:OC? If so, why? Kire1975 (talk) 02:44, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- "Non-defining", the very first one on the page, just like I've already said twice now. And the "why" is because the definition of a defining characteristic is one that is central to the topic's notability, such that it will virtually always be mentioned in virtually all coverage that the topic gets. As I said, if the articles were about the 2020 iterations of these festivals specifically — like 2020 Berlin International Film Festival or 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, then having been cancelled in 2020 would be a defining characteristic of those articles because the articles were specifically about the 2020 festivals. But if the articles are just general overviews of the festival as an overall concept, not a 2020-specific splitout, then having been cancelled in 2020 is not a defining characteristic. It's a trait that's specific to one year, not a central feature of the festival's entire history. Bearcat (talk) 03:10, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- Ok, cool, I have created a new section Impact of the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic on cinema § Film Festivals. Definitely needs to be improved, but I change my vote to Delete, another reason is that the OP doesn't know how to spell canceled. Kire1975 (talk) 08:02, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- Don't criticize people for simply speaking and writing a different dialect of English than you do. Both canceled and cancelled are valid and correct spellings; it's just that one is more common in the United States while the other is more common in the United Kingdom and Canada. Bearcat (talk) 13:12, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- Delete, the cancellation is a defining characteristic of e.g. Beverly Hills Film Festival 2020 but not a defining characteristic of all Beverly Hills Film Festivals. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:35, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- Delete; only makes sense for articles about specific years of film festivals, not as a defining category for the entire festival. Trivialist (talk) 12:34, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- Delete per Marcocapelle and Trivialist. None of the pages categorised are for specific years; all of them are articles on the whole history of the festival, for which a one-year cancellation is not WP:DEFINING. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs)
- Delete If any of the year instances have articles, there's the supercategory that they can go in. No need for it (also, bad capitalization in title suggests the creator is not familiar with categories) Kingsif (talk) 17:10, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- Delete Not a defining category: everything is being cancelled. Bondegezou (talk) 11:34, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
- Delete per nom, quite unnecessary irrelevant category. Abishe (talk) 02:38, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
- Delete as not specific enough. The setup seems to imply that these film festivals are canceled outright because of the pandemic. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 20:07, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
- Delete nearly anything occurring over a period of time where disruption occurs will be affected but not notable for being affected. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 23:32, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
- Comment Maybe this should also be applied to Category:Concert tours cancelled due to the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic and Category:Music events cancelled due to the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. Liz Read! Talk! 14:35, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Those categories are alright, since they specifically contain editions of the year 2020. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:52, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
- Marcocapelle I'm not sure about Category:Concert tours cancelled due to the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. It looks to me like it's miss-named. None of these concert tours were actually cancelled, only some shows (some of them not even cancelled, just postponed/rescheduled). Armbrust The Homunculus 17:27, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Armbrust: Ah I see. Well that's a different issue then, so I suppose that should become a separate nomination. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:08, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

(Possibly alt rename to Category:Wikipedians interested in The Hunger Games (film series) although that does not seem very necessary per this related discussion). - @Gonnym, Armbrust, and BrownHairedGirl: pinging contributors to speedy discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:54, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose on two fronts. I proposed with disambiguation so oppose any title that does not have it (as a side note, I fail see how a minimally participated discussion from 2012 is somehow a precedent to not follow C2D, while we have dozens of other categories that follow it. A minority of categories do not follow it, they aren't a precedent, but a WP:LOCALCONSENSUS anomaly). Also oppose nom's WP:UCAT argument. I see nowhere where it says to use "interest" if a user "likes" something. If you are referring to
This includes any grouping of users by interest in a subject – that is, interest in editing articles related to a certain topic – so long as the topic is not overly narrow or vague (see below: Categories that are overly narrow in scope, Categories that are vaguely defined). Note that merely liking/disliking or supporting/opposing something does not necessarily imply an interest in editing articles related to it. Any interest that is not relevant to encyclopedia-building, such as an interest in eating éclairs, cannot form the basis of an appropriate user category.
then "liking" or being a "fan" of something, does not in any way mean you are "interested in editing the article". --Gonnym (talk) 22:02, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
- If liking does not imply the willingness to discuss Wikipedia issues around it then the category should be deleted. I am not convinced it of this however. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:43, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- How exactly do you read from User:UBX/The Hunger Games that the user is willing to collaborate on editing articles of that nature? Don't assume your intentions are what people using the actual template is. Regarding deletion, I've tried following that guideline with a different category and nominated it. The consensus was that editor's just don't care what that guideline says. This (and the other categories in the tree) are just fandom categories of the "I like this" nature. Nothing else. --Gonnym (talk) 10:03, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Gonnym, if this is just a fandom category, then it should be deleted. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:09, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- @BrownHairedGirl: this wasn't your response during this discussion. Not sure how this is different. --Gonnym (talk) 18:20, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Gonnym: that was a discussion about a lame joke category which was cluttering up Special:WantedCategories. It probably fails WP:UCAT (because WP:UP#OWN), but we were caught between a bunch of editors who wanted to delete it per WP:UP#OWN, and a bunch of vocal and stubborn editors who refused to remove it from their talk pages if it was deleted. So it was one of a number of similar categories which ended up being kept in Category:Idiosyncratic Wikipedians.
Which of my comments in that discussion do you think is relevant here? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:32, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- The fact that you didn't support it's deletion, as you said above that
if this is just a fandom category, then it should be deleted
, yet joke categories which fail the same guideline, are ok? I fail to see how it, or anything in Category:Wikipedians with unconventional user categories are ok, but being a "fan of" or "liking something" is a big no-no. Seems very much like a double standard. --Gonnym (talk) 18:49, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Gonym: please just read what I wrote above at 18:32. That one was kept simply because of the disruptive effect caused by a bunch of editors who won't accept a consensus because they don'y uphold WP:UP#OWN. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 01:48, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

- Support - as this is not a subcat of any category related to any film, I can't get particularly interested in disambiguation. The Hunger Games is in fact a book series, but then so is James Bond and most of the others in Category:Wikipedians by interest in a film series. Oculi (talk) 23:59, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
