Category:Suicides by defenestration

The result of the discussion was: manual merge. As Moonraker12 notes, most articles are already in subcategories of Category:Suicides by jumping so an automated merge would not be appropriate. This closure is without prejudice to a later nomination of subcategories of Category:Suicides by jumping. (non-admin closure) Marcocapelle (talk) 05:03, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Not defining. It doesnt make much difference what a person jumps off. Rathfelder (talk) 09:13, 7 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment wouldn't it be "defenestrating" like "death by hanging", "death by poisoning" ? Arguably it's not the ejection from the window that kills him but the hard impact with the ground; so it would be "suicide by hard impact" really. That's quite transparent. • Merge per nom. --Just N. (talk) 19:56, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, I'd be opposed; This is part of a category tree dealing with defenestration, and populated with 73 articles. What would be the plan for them? Recategorizing as suicides by jumping? Arguably many of them are already included in the 50-odd 'Suicide by jumping by country' categories (14 of which have only one article in them) If we are wanting to reduce the number of categories overall, maybe start there? Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

  • Merge from Defenstration -Defenestration is the act of throwing someone or something out of a window. - I think the term "defenstration" more properly refers to being pushed out a window rather than jumping from a window. In any event, the distinction between jumping from a window, jumping from a balcony, and jumping from a roof is not one that we need to make. Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category level with just one subcategory. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:44, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Category of debatable utility, whose creator used it to categorize two films that weren't "Quebec films" in any substantive way (they did some shooting in Montreal but weren't productions of Quebec-based film studios) and one film (already removed) that wasn't even in English -- and then, for added bonus they filed it as a subcategory of Category:English-language films by country and Category:English-language French films, neither of which are accurate at all.
It's not at all clear that this would be a defining characteristic of these films: while it's true that English Canadian and Quebec cinema function as quasi-distinct entities due to the language difference, Quebec is still part of Canada and its films are still Canadian, so it's not at all obvious that the intersection of "English-language" with "Quebec" is an important characteristic per se. But to the extent that it has any potential value at all, it would be better implemented by somebody who actually knows what they're doing, rather than collecting international coproductions and Denys Arcand films. • Comment in this case, there's also be problem of "Hollywood North" of the 1970s, which was Montreal. And that the Canadian film industry was based in Montreal before moving to Toronto, and that the Canadian Film Board is still in Montreal. -- 65.92.246.43 (talk) 03:53, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - I'm not entirely certain what is meant by a "Quebec film" in any case, and I'm sure the average Wikipedia reader wouldn't be, either - are these films shot in Quebec, produced in Quebec, by Quebecois film makers, set in Quebec? Would, for example, I Confess or The Score be regarded as English-language Quebec films? I understand that Quebec is a special case, but I can't think of any other film category based on a subnational region in this way, and - while it's fairly clear what a Canadian film might be - it becomes harder when you have films that might be financed by national film boards, for example. Grutness...wha? 00:33, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Upmerge which is fairly similar to delete; there are only 2 entries in this category (and I believe several articles in Category:Quebec films are in English. That category needs some clarification but should exist, but I don't think we need this intersection in the category tree. Articles are already in categories such as Category:French-language films.
