Nominator's rationale: delete, only one article in the category, this is not helpful for navigation. There is no need to merge, the article is already in Category:Secular senators of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Marcocapelle (talk) 23:05, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: This almost falls into WP:C2F, except this category contains two entries, which are both redirects pointing at the same article. 1234qwer1234qwer4 23:01, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: delete, currently only one article in the category, this is not helpful for navigation. While born in Czernihow Voivodeship in the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, the subject of the article lived in the Russian Empire during adulthood. Category:Turn-based video games

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 05:57, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: I recently removed the only article that was in this category (NOT the subcategories) "Farlanders" and to be honest, gameplay that is turn-based (progressing in turns) is not very defining. We didn't even include "Digital tabletop games in this category for that matter, but there are so many Chess simulators, Turn-based puzzles like Sokoban, Rogue, heck, even many point-and-click adventure games... It's too plain and basic to be defining, I guess. QuantumFoam66 (talk) 22:06, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep IMO, it's defining for the video games within. Journalists commonly use "turn-based" without specifying a genre to describe gameplay systems, such as here and here, which was my basis for creating it, so I fail to see how it's not defining. Obviously though, if other people disagree I am fine with it getting deleted. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 22:26, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Zxcvbnm: Can you provide examples of turn-based games that don't fit into the subcategories? If it's a common gameplay element, then I would say it probably is defining. But if pretty much all turn-baed games are strategy or role-playing games, this is a redundant category layer. (I would argue chess is a turn-based strategy game, and point-and-click adventures aren't really based on "turns".) Mclay1 (talk) 15:02, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say it's not redundant because it fits into the established category tree of Category:Video games by gameplay element, which is not "video games by gameplay element and genre". Turn-based is a gameplay element, strategy/tactics/role-playing is a genre. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 22:31, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Painters by theme

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Painters by genre. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 05:50, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Propose renaming Category:Painters by theme to Category:UNKNOWN
Nominator's rationale: Johnbod suggested at a previous CFD that this one should also be renamed from "theme", perhaps to "Category:Painters by type of subject". Alternatively, Category:Painters by genre would match the linked category on Commons, and fit within Category:Artists by genre. – Fayenatic London 19:36, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Either would be a big improvement - or "Category:Painters by subject" if that is preferred. I rather demur at using "genre" here, because the word is unfortunately ambiguous as it relates to art - genre painting is one particular genre/type of subject, whereas here we are covering a wide range of other genres. But maybe that horse has bolted. For those just joining, in art and art history, "death" and "love" are themes, the Lamentation of Christ is a subject (which has themes as well). Religious painting, or say altarpiece, is a type of subject, hence my suggesting that. Johnbod (talk) 22:11, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Thai anime-influenced Western animated television series. What? Western animated television series, from Thailand and influenced by anime? Category:Edo

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus to rename; no consensus to merge. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 05:51, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: rename, Edo is the former name of Tokyo, but we hardly ever categorize based on a name only. If not merged, rename to Category:Edo (former Tokyo) in order to avoid confusion with Category:Edo (ethnic group). Marcocapelle (talk) 09:01, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Marcocapelle is correct that categories are often disambiguated even when their eponymous articles are not, which is why speedy criterion C2D does not apply in those cases. Mclay1 (talk) 03:16, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • How much do these individual articles even belong in this category in the first place? It looks to me like many of them could be sorted into better categories than this one. Take Yakatabune, for example. The connection to Edo is clear but I'm not really sure what good the categorization is. Note that it isn't in a category for Tokyo or for the Heian period. -- asilvering (talk) 23:03, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 05:51, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:OCAT by intersection of unrelated characteristics. We do not have a comprehensive scheme of categorizing people for every possible intersection of two unrelated types of work that they might have done over the course of their lives; this is permitted in a few specific situations (usually having to do with politics if anything) where the intersection is itself a notable concept, but not across the board for every possible combination, and sports/acting is one of the combinations we don't categorize for.
As well, there's an apparent conflict between the category's name and its contents, because the usage note says "This page consists of cricket players acted in Serials, Reality shows and Films", but reality shows and serials are not films, and appearing in reality shows doesn't constitute acting in the first place. So even if there were a good reason to keep this, it would still have to be either renamed or purged. Bearcat (talk) 16:31, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Nomination for Isoceles-sai who requested this at the Teahouse. C F A 💬 16:17, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The category makes no sense. It collects a disparate collection of pages with nothing in common; there is no text to explain what the category is about. Isoceles-sai (talk) 16:27, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Marcocapelle:" the category should be renamed to Category:Triller (company)".
I've also added a description of the subject as suggested. I've complied with all issues, and I've more than made my case for why this page shouldn't be deleted. Thecleanerand (talk) 13:58, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Thecleanerand: my opinion was and still is that Category:Triller should be renamed, but of course only after and based on consensus in this discussion. I certainly did not mean that a new category should be unilaterally created before the discussion has been closed. It is very unhelpful to undertake this sort of action while the discussion is still ongoing. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:26, 23 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    No.
What's "unhelpful" is an admin making me wait 3 DAYS to end a discussion that should have NEVER been started in the first place. Thecleanerand (talk) 00:41, 25 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete We don't usually list templates in categories (which is better at this purpose than a cat), and this isn't a defining characteristic of any of the articles as a whole. And the description added is way too long and reads as WP:PROMO; if this is kept it needs to be shortened to basics like a short title description. Nate (chatter) 20:48, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: convert to hidden category. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 05:53, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This is one example from Category:Wikipedia non-free images, which has some maintenance categories which should continue to exist, so I'm not nominating that parent category. But there are scores of subcategories like this one. I don't want to nominate them all, and this single one is sufficient to think thru this together.
All of the images in this category were uploaded with a promise to use them as conservatively as possible. That includes using them only in one article, at the top, to "identify" the entity, let the reader see what the entity looks like, which, fine, reasonable fair use and allowed by our policy, no problem there.
But why are we providing other ways to view them out of their fair-use context?
I mean, the main use of categories is to help the reader to navigate. Here we are saying "Hey, want to have an easy way browse thru a bunch of copyrighted images we don't have the rights to, out of their intended context, and which were uploaded on a promise of strictly constrained fair use? Well, here y'go!". Could we convert this category to a list? No, we couldn't. Isn't any category which couldn't be legally converted to a list kind of problematic?
How is this OK? Am I missing something here? What is the legit purpose of this category? (If it's maintenance, OK, but then hide it, right?) Herostratus (talk) 03:09, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Right. There's no option for "hide" when you make a nomination, otherwise I would have used it. But I see you can edit the word after nomination so I did that now. Also, there are categories like Category:Album covers with thousands of members, few of which are free (and not on Commons). That's a whole nother thing... maybe there should be an RfC on this issue, I don't know... Herostratus (talk) 05:23, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
