The result of the discussion was: delete. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 00:36, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This is a subclass of Category:Categories by individual, which is inappropriate because most of its child categories are by country not individual. Once you remove those categories, you're left with just Category:Criminal activities by perpetrator. "Perpetrator" is a crime-related term which is not likely appropriate for additional subcategories beyond that one. Palestinian territories

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Rename/merge as nominated. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 00:42, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Follow-up to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 March 5#Palestinian territories. From "1940s in the Palestinian territories" onward, the rest of the list may also be deleted instead of renamed. The article about 1987 in the Israeli Civil Administration area was apparently moved from "Palestine" based on the argument that using "Palestine" for events before 1987 would be anachronistic. Deleting these categories would also be acceptable, as they are merely container categories. I'm fine with both options—either renaming the pre-1987 entries or deleting them altogether. Hassan697 (talk) 18:09, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge or rename post-1987 categories, per earlier discussions. Do not delete pre-1987 categories because deletion would destroy the interconnection between the articles in this tree. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:23, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • Right – if only some are renamed, please would the nominator or closer insert REDIRECT for those that are to be renamed, for 5 years after the cutoff, 5 decades after the cutoff, and the centuries. Then the bot will leave redirects for the benefit of category navigation. – Fayenatic London 11:41, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • @User:Fayenatic london, Marcocapelle: OK, then let's proceed with merging/renaming all the relevant categories, as I originally proposed and as they are currently tagged. To clarify why I initially distinguished between post-1987 and pre-1988: this was based on the 1988 Palestinian Declaration of Independence, which formally proclaimed the State of Palestine. However, on further reflection, I agree that this declaration should not be treated as a defining moment for categorisation purposes. It doesn't significantly change the administrative or territorial reality relevant to these categories. Do you agree with this course of action? Hassan697 (talk) 19:12, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • I think so. "Palestinian territories" is clearly anachronistic for 1947–1966, and I think the recent precedents lean towards using "Palestine" throughout. Note to closer: if the whole set is renamed, there is no need to keep any redirects.
But I am not clear what should be done with the IMG and ICA chronology categories. I think these were created as precursors to the Palestinian chronology categories for 1967 to 1994. There was a consensus to merge IMG/ICA and Palestinian layers at CFD in 2018, but I see that Dash9Z (talk · contribs) has recently undone that merger, apparently without discussion. Picking a year at random, the articles in Category:1983 in the Israeli Civil Administration area could be merged into 1983 in Palestine, but despite the 2018 consensus, Category:1983 establishments in the Israeli Civil Administration area might be usefully kept separate as a sub-cat of 1983 establishments in Palestine, as Dash9Z has populated it with Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza. Maybe ICA establishments should remain as sub-cats of Palestine, but IMG would have to be a parent of Palestine cats for 1967–1981 as it also included Golan and Sinai. – Fayenatic London 11:13, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Fayenatic london: I made the years in the Israeli Military Governorate/Israeli Civil Administration categories, along with their corresponding establishment and disestablishment years, as the parent categories of the years in Palestine under those administrations, along with the corresponding establishment and disestablishment years, to address the fact that Golan and Sinai were also included. I think the IMG/ICA years categories should be about Israeli activities and the Palestinian years categories under the IMG/ICA should be about Palestinian activities. Dash9Z (talk) 01:02, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcocapelle: please can you remove your "Do not delete pre-1987 categories" proviso now that all years are to be renamed? – Fayenatic London 21:04, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support renaming for obvious reasons AHI-3000 (talk) 19:02, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support renaming/merging for consistency and obvious reasons EXCEPT for Category:Palestinian territories. That category should stay for its parent article Occupied Palestinian territories and related articles. Dash9Z (talk) 01:08, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: manually merge, redundant category layer with 1-2 subcategories each. Most subcategories are already in the tree of the targets, hence a manual merge is needed. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:51, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Greco-Roman world vs Classical antiquity

The result of the discussion was: merge/rename as nominated. I will tell the bot to leave a redirect after the merge. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 16:17, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: merge the top category, largely overlapping scope, both contain Category:Ancient Greece + Category:Ancient Rome as their key components. By all means keep a redirect. Also merge per WP:G4, we already merged it back in 2016. User:Fayenatic london and User:Jc37 participated in that discussion, User:Dimadick did the recreation, User:TSventon discovered the previous discussion. Rename the subcategories listed above, per Jc37's earlier point to remove the term "Greco-Roman" consistently. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:29, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm obviously not opposing this (lol) - But I'm wondering about Category:Greco-Roman ethnography. Do we need a descriptor word for "classical" for the ethnography one. Perhaps a word like era or period or history or some such? I'm asking because I don't want to see us here again because someone thought "classical" was ambiguous. Another option could be to follow the others and do something similar: "Category:Ethnography of classical antiquity" for them. (of, not in, because it is a study "of" the time, not a study taking place during the time.) But the thing is, when I read over ethnography and look at Category:Ethnography, I'm doubtful about whether that category should exist at all. It seems a hodge-podge of Greco-Roman-related things, including locations, which, as far as I can tell, shouldn't be there at all. I welcome others' thoughts on this. - jc37 18:27, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am certainly open to alternative solutions for this one. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:28, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
After reading over Ethnography and Historiography, I think we should UpMerge that category to Category:Classical historiography. It looks like this is a bit of overlapcat, for one thing. An interesting line from Ethnography#Origins" "From Herodotus forward, ethnography was a mainstay of ancient historiography.". The second reason, is the subcats. If Ethnography "... encompasses the ways in which ancient authors described and analyzed foreign cultures", then why are the tribes cats "...in classical historiography", and not "...in classical ethnography"? Again, I think it's due to the overlap of the topics. Basically, it seems to only differ in what perspective we're looking at the same thing from. Anyway, I think UpMerging would be better for clarity. - jc37 18:33, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge and redirect parent again, rename others per nom. I think Category:Classical civilizations should be nominated next; Classical antiquity could go directly in the most appropriate Civilisations parent… but we can leave that now for another day. – Fayenatic London 21:22, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge and redirect as nominated; "Greco-Roman" is clunky, if not necessarily incorrect (certainly not in all instances). Whether the "Classical ethnography" category is justified or correctly populated is another matter entirely, though some of its contents seem appropriate. Nominator's rationale: The cat has no description, but looking into its contents I gather it is intended for concepts named by non-English words. If this is so, then it must be deleted, because the language of the name of the concept is not a defining characteristic of a concept. Heck, 90% of concepts are in Greek or Latin :-) --Altenmann >talk 04:06, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:1670s ships. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 00:35, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per notice on category, consensus within Wikipedia:WikiProject Ships states that prior to 1740, ships should be categorized by decade. –Aidan721 (talk) 01:39, 7 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
but on merging Category:1672 beginnings, noting that the single entry is (now) included in List of ship launches in 1672, and that Category:1670s ships is already in Category:1670s beginnings, I do not think that merging the content from here is a good approach. - Davidships (talk) 11:16, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: no consensus. This is probably the longest-running CFD I have closed. The bottom line is that there is no consensus for any particular further action; Marcocapelle and jc37 both state they are happy with the current tree; LaundryPizza0 proposed a forward merge, and 4meter4 supports a reverse merge. Even numbers and even arguments means no consensus for any particular action. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 19:45, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Forms a category loop with Category:Fiction set in prison, and contains no articles. All the other subcategories are already in the other category. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 07:00, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Fiction set in X" categories normally only contain "Works set in X" and Fictional elements in X (mostly characters). This case is no exception to that. I tend to think that the "Fiction set in" category layer is redundant, rather than the "Works set in" layer. The works and fictional elements can be linked to each other in the header of the category page, just like songs and albums. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:27, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. This is the parent category. There is narrative non-fiction set in prison(s), and deleting this would result in removing those works from the category tree. This also includes any future works that are created which is highly likely. Further I note that Category:Documentary films about the penal system (which is non-fiction) is part of Category:Films set in prison so really the Medium by setting tree is better suited to the "works by setting" structure because the medium cats by setting do not inherently sort out fiction from non-fiction. The whole Fiction by setting category structure is badly conceived and should probably be deprecated. If a deletion happens it should be the fiction category that is deleted after being merged to this one.4meter4 (talk) 00:33, 5 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - I just tagged Category:Fiction set in prison (for merging to Category:Works set in prison). Essentially a reverse merge. If someone would like to relist this : ) - jc37 18:26, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reverse merge and purge As noted above, "Works" is the broader cat. And I'm looking at the "fiction" cat, and it's filled with films and songs, etc., so UpMerging would be appropriate. It also has characters, which aren't settings nor are they fictional works that are set anywhere. And for that matter, it also has fictional settings, which shouldn't be here either. In other words, these are fictional elements, not the works of fiction themselves. See also: Category:Fictional elements by work. And while we do not have Category:Fictional characters by work, we do have: Category:Fictional locations by work. What we don't have: Category:Fictional characters by fictional work setting. Nor do we have: Category:Fictional places by fictional work setting. Sounds like too many intersections for categorizing. - jc37 18:26, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
