The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: multiple merge. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 04:07, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The same one page, 2022 North Macedonia protests, is the only page in this tree of three categories. 216.58.25.209 (talk) 22:45, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Isolated categories for two entries, which are both already in the target category. A more populated series begins with Category:1720s animal deaths. – Fayenatic London 22:18, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. Liz Read! Talk! 21:40, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Hopelessly vague category. I could find several things that have been referred to as "torrid" (e.g. Atmosphere of Venus, Climate of Arizona, 2021 Western North America heat wave). It's because "torridness" is a dictionary word, not a scientifically defined concept. In addition, the eponymous article was deleted as a DICDEF, and the word does not appear in either of the two categorized articles, so the cat fails the verifiability criterion anyway. Category:Monotypic dinosaur genera

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge the four listed categories. Additional categories for merging may be nominated separately. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 05:06, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: The vast majority (>95%) of dinosaur genera are monotypic (that is, consisting of a single species). This is not a defining trait, and merely adds a needless layer of Wikipedia:Overcategorization cruft. Hemiauchenia (talk) 17:05, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like a reason to delete the entire Category:Monotypic dinosaur genera tree (with the exception of Monotypic bird genera), rather than just this one. Are you alright with bundling those into this nomination? jlwoodwa (talk) 17:08, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Events by time

The result of the discussion was: merge. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 05:02, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: (manually) merge. This is follow-up from this earlier discussion. "Events" is used here in a vague meaning of anything that happened, while imho we should use the events tree only for organized events such as cultural events and sports events. • Support, there may be more specific trees to split out, but "Events" is not helpful for navigation. CMD (talk) 07:32, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. –Aidan721 (talk) 15:39, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - I'm unsure. I agree with "historical events" being redundant. But I'm looking at the parent: Category:Categories by parameter, and wondering if "categories by" is the best way to go about this. Its parent is Category:Wikipedia categories, which (per category naming conventions) suggests that this tree is for project cats, not content cats. There's something inherently broken here, I think, or at least some confusion concerning these categories and this set of trees. Are they supposed to only be based upon infobox parameters? That doesn't "seem" to be the limitation of this tree - especially if the plan is to merge "events by" into this set of trees. Maybe "categories by", should become "topics by", or even reverse merge to "events by". I don't know. But I think it's worth discussing to see if we can clarify all of this to make these trees clearer. - jc37 16:02, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jc37: Category:Wikipedia categories is simply the highest category in the tree of content and other categories. It is called Wikipedia because the whole categorization system exists only within the Wikipedia project. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:58, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    I thought that was: Category:Contents.
Category:Wikipedia categories is even labelled a maintenance category. And its catdesc even suggests that it isn't for content cats. (It looks like I even added a clarifying link back in 2023.)
    So I think some clarity might be helpful here. - jc37 18:44, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Category:Wikipedia categories is the top-level category for all categories that categorize categories. This kind of meta-category is considered a project category, since it's only useful to editors, but the categories it contains may contain content categories. jlwoodwa (talk) 18:53, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Technically, you just defined the whole of the category system. All categories categorise categories.
So it comes to: What specific kinds of categories should be in this tree? And how should they be named? And what content should we expect to find in such categories?
I dunno, maybe it's because we're being a bit generic in naming here.
And to be clear, the reason I'd like to see this de-obfuscated, is because I agree with the nom, we shouldn't need multiple overlapping trees doing the same thing. So let's get a handle on this and work forward from the start. - jc37 19:24, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge per nom. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 02:05, 19 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: I think the categories currently in events ultimately need to be split into either the existing history tree or a new organized events tree. It seems a lot of the stuff currently in the nominated categories should ideally be somehow accommodated under Category:History. --Paul_012 (talk) 13:56, 22 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Per WP:OCAWARD, this is nota defining characteristic for the large majority of its notable recipients; for the vast majority (if not all) of its contents it is nota defining characteristic of the recipient. This is something that should be, and already is, covered by a list, not a category. The Bushranger One ping only 03:27, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The **Nelson P. Jackson Aerospace Memorial Award** has been described by NASA as "the space world’s equivalent of an Academy Award." The National Space Club has been a leading voice in advancing the country’s space exploration efforts, and many companies have benefited over the years from being associated with this award. Companies have promoted it in the newspapers, promotional materials, and on their websites when they win this award. There is no question that the award has launched entire careers and companies.

The same companies and organizations currently listed in the Category:Collier Trophy recipients include:

In addition, other similarly notable companies such as Pan-Am, Raytheon, Rolls-Royce, Garmin, and Gulfstream Aerospace are also included in the Category:Collier Trophy recipients.

Categorization as a **major award** recipient has been considered aa defining characteristic of the recipient and because most of the major organizations in the Category:Nelson P. Jackson Aerospace Memorial Award winners category are already listed in similar award categories, this category should be kept. DJ71park (talk) 14:44, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 04:52, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: No such category scheme exists for Category:Soundtracks to films by director. In fact, the tree was deleted in a Cfd from September 2018. And this category was part of a mass deletion as the result of that (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums/Article alerts/Archive 11#CfD). I'd agree with the previous nomination that this is just an unnecessary intersection of music and film for categorization purposes. I didn't see where the subcategories of the "by director" scheme were nominated; they were just deleted following the result to delete the parent. If that qualifies for G4, then great. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 04:23, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
