This means that the article attached to this category is Leuciscidae. Quetzal1964 (talk) 18:29, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

- Additionally, some cleanup will be needed to place genera into relevant intermediate-level taxa, such as Category:Plagopterinae. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 05:21, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- LaundryPizza03 the taxa are not synonymous, Leuciscidae is the parent of Leuciscinae, the nominate subfamily in the Leuciscidae (see the article Leuciscidae). Otherwise you are correct, we will still need a Category:Leuciscinae but it will be a subcategory of Category:Leuciscidae. I will, therefore, withdraw this request Quetzal1964 (talk) 10:43, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, / RemoveRedSky [talk] [gb] 16:51, 7 March 2025 (UTC)- @Wozal and RemoveRedSky: the article Mercy College (New York) was moved to Mercy University in 2023 so this could have been listed for speedy merging under WP:CFD/S criterion WP:C2D: Consistency with main article's name. TSventon (talk) 17:06, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- @TSventon - I don't disagree. The article Hamilton College has been named such since 2018 but still retains Category:Hamilton College (New York) and its subcategories within Category:Hamilton College (New York) and have been turned down for reasons like this: Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 April 16#Category:Hamilton College (New York). I was hoping a discussion could help get the conversation on other articles which might be impacted. Wozal (talk) 17:13, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Wozal: C2D doesn't apply when the new name is ambiguous, like Hamilton College, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Category:Mercy College (New York) and Category:Mercy College (New York) faculty have already been renamed, so I don't know what else needs to be discussed. It is important to list subcategories when renaming a category, otherwise they may get left behind. TSventon (talk) 17:29, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: These categories redirect to Category:Canadian female track and field athletes, which makes no sense. RussBot moved powerlifter April Hutchinson there, which is clearly wrong. Same thing happened to golfer Christina Lecuyer a few weeks back. Paradoctor (talk) 13:42, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Comment this is ultimately a question of national variety of English. As creator of one of these categories, I would have no issue with deleting if it's confusing. If deleted, the targets should be locked from recreation also to avoid potential future confusion, per the tree Category:Male athletes. SFB 20:34, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Took me a minute to work out what you mean. What we're dealing with is an ambiguous category that needs to be disambiguated by English variety. So, either rename, or tag with {{category ambiguous}}, analogous to Category:Athletes. Or delete. Paradoctor (talk) 20:57, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

- Merge, "Reykjanes Peninsula" and "Southern Peninsula" are used interchangeably, and it is not clear whether any of the articles is about Reykjanes proper (i.e. it is not a defining characteristic). Marcocapelle (talk) 13:07, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

Per-year categories from 500s BC, 400s BC, 300s BC
- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: keep. Thank you to participants for keeping it civil. There were some concerns over the (then-)concurrent nomination of the same categories (e.g. Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2025 March 1#6th-century BC deaths by year), however, I am setting those concerns aside given that this discussion has been open for over a week after that discussion was closed. Turning to the merits, this was largely a redux of the many post-SMALLCAT-deprecation discussions attempting to figure out how to thread the needle between current utility and future utility of categories. Like most discussions, some editors argued that these categories are currently unhelpful for navigation and thus should be upmerged. Others argued that they will be helpful in the future, and that upmerging would be a disservice to readers. Neither side is particularly stronger than another when viewed through our PAGs, so I would be supervoting if I did not close in favor of the approximately 5–2 majority in favor of keeping. - Keep. E.g. Category:399 BC has now 5 entries in the deaths cat, plus 3 other entries. The previous one, Category:400 BC, has 3 births, 4 deaths, and 1 other. Number of entries (without any effort to populate them further): 398 = 7, 397 = 7, 396 = 4, 395 = 6, 394 = 9, 393 = 5... I see no reason to take hundreds of correctly categorized articles and put them in less precise categories just because... Fram (talk) 09:47, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- The 390s deaths category, if all subcategories were merged, would only have 20 articles. That seems like a good size, especially given that the specific year of death is in some cases uncertain. I'm not sure what the benefit is of having more precise categories; presumably these would all be listed in order in the Deaths section of the article on this decade. -- Beland (talk) 21:30, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- And this is not "just because", but because WP:OCYEAR recommends doing it for small categories. Presumably to make navigation by category less choppy and click-heavy. -- Beland (talk) 02:31, 12 March 2025 (UTC)

- Procedural comment, this overlaps with several still running discussions, for example Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2025_March_1#6th-century_BC_deaths_by_year. The nomination of the main year categories is definitely new. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:17, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Oh dear, I hadn't noticed those. -- Beland (talk) 21:30, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Support at least until 400 BC. I am on the fence with respect to the last century which appears to be populated a lot better (especially the second half of the century). Marcocapelle (talk) 09:32, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- No objection up to 501 BC, as I have already conceded other 6th century categories elsewhere, but keep 500 BC onwards. I never had a problem with the old guidance in the former WP:SMALLCAT, which permitted small categories if they are part of an established structure. Even though that no longer has consensus as a principle, IMHO this hierarchy works fine and should be retained. – Fayenatic London 10:04, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

- Keep There are plenty of deaths & events for those years to justify keeping those categories. That these categories have yet to be satisfactorily populated merely reflects both a bias for recent events, & that Wikipedia is not finished. -- llywrch (talk) 15:30, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

I'm sure our coverage of the deep past is incomplete, but there were also far fewer people alive, far fewer written documents kept, and many documents concerning this time span have been lost. We can't assume recentism is the only reason why these categories would be smaller than, say the 1700s. It would be nice to quantify how far we have left to go. -- Beland (talk) 21:17, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- In the absence of a known stopping point, I'll note that we've been accumulating articles on these topics for over two decades now. It seems much more likely to me that given the law of diminishing returns, in the next 10 years we'll have something like 50% more articles in these categories, which would still leave them sparsely populated. It seems unlikely we'd have 1000% more articles in the next 10 years, which is about how many I would want to see before saying upmerge isn't warranted. (E.g. going from one article in Category:300 BC births to ten, and having all of the years filled in rather than more than half the years in that decade having zero births noted.) -- Beland (talk) 02:38, 12 March 2025 (UTC)

- Keep - Although WP:SMALLCAT is no longer in effect, it has not been replaced by a consensus that we must delete all categories that are currently small. The categories under consideration here seem natural to have and likely to continue growing. I furthermore don't understand what is gained by upmerging them. LeSnail (talk) 16:07, 13 March 2025 (UTC)
- Neutral Note - Apparently Wikipedia:Timeline standards has been updated to reflect merging anything prior to 999 AD. See also this edit. With that in mind, this probably should be either relisted or have a "no action" procedural close. - jc37 20:44, 4 April 2025 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: The per-year parent categories were recently merged into decade categories like Category:690s BC. These are in turn already under Category:7th century BC. Where per-year categories don't exist, neither does "Years of the", e.g. Category:Years of the 8th century BC. -- Beland (talk) 08:51, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Delete per precedent. Marcocapelle (talk) 09:23, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Keep as part of Category:Years. It is nonsense that we had removed e.g. 702 BC from the Years hierarchy, so I have reinstated and repopulated Category:Years of the 8th century BC. It was deleted as empty in December, but the year articles should have been in it directly as well as their (now deleted) eponymous year categories. As for earlier year articles, I have added 841 BC, 814 BC and 804 BC directly into Category:Years, but favour creating Category:Years of the 9th century BC to hold them. – Fayenatic London 10:35, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- That would be fine too, as long as we are consistent. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:14, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- There are a very small number of items listed in these per-year articles:
- 804 BC - 3 items
- 814 BC - 1 item
- 841 BC - 6 items
- 702 BC - 3 items
- These should be merged into decade articles, which also have a very small number of items:
- 800s BC (decade) - 7 items
- 810s BC - 4 items
- 840s BC - 5 items
- 700s BC (decade) - 21 items (of which 5 are rounded to the nearest 10 or 100 years)
- Even if per-year lists double in size as Wikipedia rounds out its historical coverage, they will still have a very small number of items. Events of this time are sparsely documented, and there were far fewer people alive. These categories will never have the same amount of content as, say, the 1700s. Leaving lots of small lists around results in very choppy coverage devoid of context, and is an awkward way to handle events where the precise year is uncertain. -- Beland (talk) 21:11, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- I've merged the 800s year articles and some of the 700s; will work my way through oldest first. -- Beland (talk) 22:36, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

- Keep This is something I've worked at off & on for years: populating years prior to the current era with recorded/dated events. The material is out there However, the 7th century is at the boundary for recorded events in ancient Greece, the Near East, Egypt & China. (For example, the Chinese Spring and Autumn Annals start at 751 BC.)
