Heloahvenia pidettiin aiemmin Serranidae-heimon (tuolloin 'meriahvenet') alaheimona. Alaheimon tieteellinen nimi oli aiemmin pidempään Anthiinae. Tämän nimen oli kuitenkin jo Bonelli vuonna 1813 antanut maakiitäjäisten Anthiinae-alaheimolle, joten heloahventen tieteellinen piti vaihtaa.
