The Chronic on Dr. Dren ensimmäinen sooloalbumi, se julkaistiin vuonna 1992. Ennen soolouraa hän oli osa N.W.A.-ryhmää.

Albumi nosti Yhdysvaltojen länsirannikon hip hopin myyntilistojen kärkeen. The Chronic on yksi länsirannikolle ominaisen hip hop -tyylin, G-funkin kulmakivistä. G-funk hallitsi kaupallista hip hopia useita vuosia The Chronicin julkaisun jälkeen.

Albumi on myös yksi harvoista, jolle hip hop -lehti The Source on antanut arvosanaksi täydet viisi mikrofonia. Kaupallisesti The Chronic oli myös menestys, myyden Yhdysvalloissa triplaplatinaa. Vuonna 2019 albumi valittiin mukaan Yhdysvaltain kongressin kirjaston National Recording Registry -kokoelmaan, johon kootaan esteettisesti, historiallisesti tai kulttuurisesti merkittäviä yhdysvaltalaisia äänitteitä.

Albumin nimellä viitataan kannabikseen.

Singleinä albumilta julkaistiin "Fuck Wit Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin')", "Nuthin' But a "G" Thang" ja "Let Me Ride", joista kaikista on tehty myös musiikkivideo.
