Cecile eller Cécile er kvinnenavn som betyr «blind» Navnene er vanlige i flere fransktalende land. En navnebærer er den grenadiske vitenskapskvinnen Cécile La Grenade som er generalguvernør i Grenada.

Etymologi

Cecile er den franske formen av Cecilia, som igjen stammer fra det latinske Caecilia, en feminin form av Caecilius. Dette navnet kommer videre fra caecus, som betyr «blind» på latin.

Utbredelse

Cecile ble populært i kristen tradisjon på grunn av den hellige Cecilia, en romersk martyr og skytshelgen for musikk. I Norden har Cecile vært mest utbredt i Sverige i perioden 1940–1969.
