Louise er et opprinnelig fransk kvinnenavn dannet av mannsnavnet Louis, som stammer fra det frankiske Ludvig som igjen kommer fra de gammelhøytyske ordene hlod, «berømmelse», og wig «kamp, krig».

I formen Louise er navnet kommet til norsk via tysk og dansk. Den korrekte uttalen av navnet på norsk er /loi:se/ – dvs. at den siste vokalen skal uttales. Enkelte profilerte personer velger imidlertid å uttale eget navn med utenlandsk uttale.
