Gallinago – rodzaj ptaków z podrodziny słonek (Scolopacinae) w obrębie rodziny bekasowatych (Scolopacidae).

Zasięg występowania

Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące na całym świecie oprócz obszarów antarktycznych.

Morfologia

Długość ciała 22,5–47 cm; masa ciała 65–500 g; rozpiętość skrzydeł 38–56 cm.

Systematyka

Etymologia

Gallinago: średniowiecznołac. gallinago „słonka, bekas”, od łac. gallina „kura”, od gallus „kogucik”; -ago „przypominający”.
Capella: łac. capella „koza”, od zdrobnienia caper, capri „cap”. Gatunek typowy: Scolopax coelestis Frenzel, 1801 (= Scolopax gallinago Linnaeus, 1758).
Telmatias: gr. τελματιαιος telmatiaios „z bagien”, od τελμα telma, τελματος telmatos „bagno”. Gatunek typowy: Scolopax stenura Bonaparte, 1831.
Pelorychus: gr. πηλος pēlos „błoto”; ορυσσω orussō „kopać”. Gatunek typowy: Scolopax brehmii Kaup, 1823 (= Scolopax gallinago Linnaeus, 1758).
Enalius: gr. εναλιος enalios „z morza”, od εν en „z”; ἁλς hals, ἁλος halos „morza”. Gatunek typowy: Scolopax sabini Vigors, 1825 (= Scolopax gallinago Linnaeus, 1758).
Xylocota: gr. ξυλον xulon „drewno”; κοτος kotos „niechęć, uraza, nienawiść”, od κοτεω koteō „mieć urazę”. Gatunek typowy: Scolopax paludosa J.F. Gmelin, 1789 (= Scolopax undulata Boddaert, 1783).
