Systematyka
Rodzaj zdefiniował w 1830 roku niemiecki przyrodnik Johann Georg Wagler w publikacji własnego autorstwa dotyczącej systematyki płazów i gadów z wstępem dotyczącym systematyki ptaków i ssaków. Wagler wymienił trzy gatunki – Gecko porphyreus Daudin, 1802 , Lacerta sputator Sparrman, 1784 i Sphaerodactylus cinereus Wagler, 1830 – z których gatunkiem typowym jest Lacerta sputator Sparrman, 1784 .
Etymologia
Sphaerodactylus : gr. σφαιρος sphairos ‘kula, piłka’, od σφαιροω sphairoō ‘zaokrąglony’; δακτυλος daktulos ‘palec’.
