Actinomycetota

Actinomycetota (old name: Actinobacteria) are a phylum of Gram-positive bacteria. They are known for having high guanine and cytosine content (GC content) in their DNA. They include many kinds of terrestrial and aquatic bacteria.

Actinomycetota are very important to plants. They decompose dead plants and animals into good nutrients for plants. Although some fungi also decompose dead matter, actinomycetota are smaller and decompose where fungi can not. Some actinomycetota are nitrogen-fixing and turn nitrogen into useable ammonia for plants.

Notable genera include Bifidobacterium, which is important for a baby's gut microbiome. Others, like Frankia, live in plant roots.
