He has been the member of parliament (MP) for the Western Australian division of Canning since 2015. Hastie was a troop commander in the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR).

Hastie was the Assistant Minister for Defence from 2020 to 2022, during the Morrison government.

Deputy Leader of the Opposition

On 17 February 2026, after conservative MP Angus Taylor was elected party leader in the leadership spill, Hastie was reappointed to the shadow ministry, becoming Shadow Minister for Industry and Sovereign Capability. Hastie also took the role of Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives.
