Angela Merici

St. Angela Merici (21 March 1474 – 27 January 1540) was a woman in 15th century Italy who founded the Company of St. Ursula. Throughout her life, she cared for the sick, disabled, uneducated, and vulnerable members of society. St. Angela Merici created many opportunities for women, because before her time women had two options: being trapped in marriage, or confined to a convent. However, St. Angela created a new option: single women devoted to Jesus Christ and serving the world through service and offering their time rather than being limited to a monastery or a nunnery.
