A dependent personality disorder (DPD) is a type of anxious personality disorder that involves a psychological dependence on other people. It is a long-term (chronic) condition in which people depend on others to meet their emotional and physical needs.
According to the Cleveland Clinic:
People with DPD often feel helpless, submissive and incapable of taking care of themselves. They may have trouble making simple decisions.
DPD is treatable. Psychotherapy is a key treatment; medications may also be used.
Only a small percentage of people with dependent personality disorders are eventually able to manage on their own.[source?]
