The Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus), also called the Barbary ape, Barbary monkey, and tailless monkey, is a macaque species native to the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco. It is one of the best-known Old World monkey species. The Barbary macaque is the only monkey with no tail in the world, which causes it to be mistaken for apes, such as gibbons, who have shorter tails.
