Barium iodide is an ionic compound made of barium and iodide ions. The chemical formula is BaI2. The molar mass is around 391.136 g/mol (anhydrous). It usually forms the dihydrate salt when exposed to moisture and water. Like other soluble barium salts, barium iodide is toxic. It can be made when barium (metal or compound) reacts with elemental iodine or hydroiodic acid.
It is usually made when barium metal is treated with 1,2-diiodoethane in ether.
It can be made when barium metal reacts with elemental iodine to make barium iodide.
It can also can be made when barium hydroxide reacts with hydroiodic acid to make barium iodide and water.
