Breadcrumbs are very small pieces of crushed up bread that are used for cooking. Breadcrumbs are sometimes mixed with other ingredients to make food thicker. Some foods are also covered with breadcrumbs before being cooked, so that the breadcrumbs turn into a crispy crust. In Japan, a special type of flaky breadcrumb called "panko" was invented.
