Raina Telgemeier’s book, “Smile”, gave her a new idea. She wrote “El Deafo” as a graphic novel rather than a novel. She wrote from her personal experience. Bell wanted to show her point of view as a deaf kid. She talks about her life. Sign language was hard for her. In Bell’s book, “El Deafo”, she helps people understand this matter by sending a message: when you talk to a deaf person, there is no need to speak in a loud or strange way for them to understand.
Cece Bell has written 18 books including “El Deafo”, “Smell My Foot”, “Rabbit & Robot” and “Itty Bitty”. She writes kids books, picture books, and graphic novels. Bell wrote and drew 3 books with her husband, Tom Angleberger.
