Flag of Honduras

Flag of Honduras

The flag of Honduras consists of three horizontal stripes two blue, one white, with five blue stars in the center. It was created during the presidency of José María Medina on February 16, 1866. The flag represents the country's geography, its history, and regional unity with other Central American nations such as Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

The original base design of the horizontal blue-and-white stripes was initially created decades earlier by Salvadoran general Manuel José Arce. He designed the original federation flag in 1823, as an inspiration from the blue-and-white flag of Argentina, then known as the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata. President Medina's government added the final and fifth star specifically for Honduras.

Legislative Decree No. 29, issued on January 18, 1949 under the government of Juan Manuel Gálvez, made official the use of the turquoise blue color in the upper and lower stripes of the flag of Honduras, maintaining the central white stripe and the five blue stars.
