Grand Theft Auto V is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It is the seventh main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, following 2008's Grand Theft Auto IV. It is the 15th Grand Theft Auto game. It is set on a fictional Southern California, called "San Andreas". The single-player story follows three people: Michael De Santa, a bank robber, Franklin Clinton, a gangster, and Trevor Philips, a drug dealer. The open world lets players freely roam San Andreas's open countryside and the fictional city of Los Santos, based on Los Angeles.

The game was given very good reviews for it's plot, visuals and world. Its successor, Grand Theft Auto VI, is planned to be released in 2026.

An online multiplayer part of the game was released called Grand Theft Auto Online. This was created at the same time as the single-player story. Online recieved updates for the next 13 years, until 2026.

Plot

The game plays in the fictional city of Los Santos (based on Los Angeles) in the fictional state of San Andreas (based on Southern California). The story is about three protagonists: retired bank robber Michael De Santa (Ned Luke), street gangster Franklin Clinton (Shawn Fonteno), and drug dealer and gunrunner Trevor Philips (Steven Ogg). Michael starts the game in witness protection after making an agreement with the FIB (based on the FBI) to stay hidden after a bank robbery with Trevor. Their partner Brad Snider is killed in the robbery and is placed in a grave marked as Michael's. Nine years after the robbery, Michael meets Franklyn and the two work together to pay off Michael's debt. A robbery of a jewellery store by the two allows Trevor to find out that Michael is still alive. Trevor works with Michael and Franklyn to complete robberies, but he thinks that Brad is still alive.

Later, finding out that Brad is not alive, Trevor allows Michael to be kidnapped by a Chinese family gang. Fraklyn rescues Michael, and Trevor agrees to work with the pair to do a robbery on a bank for $200 million. After the successful robbery, Franklyn is given a choice to kill Trevor or Michael by people who have been wronged by them. The player is given three choices, to kill either Michael or Trevor, or to kill all of the remaining people who want them killed. If Michael or Trevor is killed, Franklyn continues after the game alone. If the other option is chosen, all three members will continue to work together.

Gameplay

Single player

Grand Theft Auto V has the same basic gameplay from the earlier games in the series. The player can walk, run, swim, climb, jump and use weapons and basic hand-to-hand combat. Players can also steal and drive many types of cars, boats, aeroplanes and motorcycles. Players can explore and choose how they want to play the game. Players can complete missions, but these are not needed to get farther into the game to open content after the first mission. When the player does a crime and the police see it, they will start to follow the player and try to arrest or kill them. The game world is the biggest in the series. Art director Aaron Garbut said that it is large enough to fit the game worlds of Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto IV inside of it.

Online multiplayer

The game also has an online multiplayer mode that is called Grand Theft Auto Online.
