Kyabje Gelek Rimpoche (26 October 1939 – 15 February 2017) was a Tibetan-American Buddhist lama. He was born in Lhasa, China. Gelek was a nephew of the 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso. He was tutored by many of the same masters who tutored the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.
Kyabje Gelek Rimpoche was the founder and president of the Jewel Heart Dharma centers and programs.
In a 2003 interview Rimpoche was asked, "We face loss of one kind or another all the time—the loss of possessions, of friendships, lovers, parents. We lose our good looks, our hair, reading vision, hearing, memory, and finally our bodies. What can we learn from this?"
Rimpoche replied, "We have two choices. Either we go crazy and try to turn the sky upside down, or we try to understand the situation. Samsara, our everyday existence, is suffering. And loss is very much a part of samsara."
Kyabje Gelek Rimpoche died of heart failure on February 15, 2017, at the age of 77, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
