Ghanaians are a people whose origins trace back to the historic Gold Coast region of West Africa. They primarily reside in the Republic of Ghana, where they constitute the predominant cultural group. As of 2024, Ghana has a population of approximately 34 million people, with Ghanaians representing about 85% of the total population. The name “Ghana” translates to “warrior king,” reflecting the region’s rich historical legacy. In addition to those residing within Ghana, an estimated four million people of Ghanaian descent form part of the global Ghanaian diaspora. In certain contexts, the term “ethnic Ghanaian” may also be used to describe related indigenous ethnic groups native to the historic Gold Coast.
