Giardia lamblia (also known as Lamblia intestinalis and Giardia duodenalis) is a parasite that infects the intestines and causes giardiasis (also called 'beaver fever'). Giardia affects humans, cats, dogs and birds, cows, beavers, deer, and sheep.

Symptoms of giardiasis, the illness caused by the giardia lamblia parasite, include watery and foul-smelling or greasy diarrhea, abdominal cramps, severe bloating and fatigue.

Giardiasis usually develops over the course of 1-3 weeks following exposure to giardia lamblia. The illness usually lasts from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Some people with giardiasis have no symptoms.
