Hollywood screenwriter Charlie Sorrel is shot and killed by Hungarian film producer Sir Leopold Sartori after Charlie is caught having an affair with Leopold's wife, Rusty. Charlie's friend, novelist George Tracy, returns from Paris to attend the memorial service. He learns that Charlie left him in charge of his estate, which is heavily in debt.
After the service, George finds a naked woman who has been brought to Charlie's house by Bruce Minton III. The woman soon remembers that she is Charlie, who has been reincarnated as a woman. She convinces George of her identity by revealing a secret only Charlie would know. George believes her transformation is karmic punishment for the way Charlie treated women.
Charlie tries to use her new identity to solve her financial problems. She pretends to be Charlie's widow and attempts to blackmail some of his former lovers. She also plans to marry Bruce for his money, but changes her mind when she realizes that he truly loves her.
Later, Leopold tries to seduce Charlie, leading to a confrontation with Rusty. Rusty shoots Charlie, who falls from the terrace into the ocean. George cannot find her body and tells the Sartoris to leave and keep the incident secret.
That night, a woman named Virginia Mason arrives at the house with her Great Dane. She looks almost identical to Charlie's new form. George realizes that she is a different person, and the two begin to develop an attraction. Virginia's dog finds Charlie's hidden bottle of vodka and drinks some of it, then begins to howl.
