Hedges, Florida

Hedges is a small community in Nassau County, now mostly absorbed by the neighboring city of Yulee.

A Nassau County Historic Resources survey says that around 1890 the small community of Hedges had developed about two miles south of Yulee where the historic Harts Road crossed a railroad line. A country store and several motels emerged in the small community of Hedges.

Hedges was never more than a small town, but the United States Geological Survey thought Hedges was important enough to put on the map, in fact a segment of map is known as the Hedges Quadrangle on a 1952 Department of the Interior Survey.

Today, the Hedges Meat Market on Harts Road is about all that's left of the town. Yulee has almost completely absorbed Hedges, along with the other historic communities called Blackrock, Nassauville, and O'Neil.

The source of the name "Hedges" remains elusive.[source?]
