Hydroxychloroquine

Hydroxychloroquine, sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a drug used to prevent and treat malaria. It can also treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and porphyria cutanea tarda.

Common side effects may include vomiting, headache, changes in vision, and muscle weakness.

Hydroxychloroquine was approved for medical use in the United States in 1955.

Clinical trials showed that Hydroxychloroquine does not prevent or treat coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‑19). Its use was later found to have contributed to 16,990 deaths in six countries during spring 2020 due to cardiovascular toxicity.
