An ionic liquid is a liquid made mostly of ions. The term is sometimes used to just mean room-temperature ionic liquids, which are liquid at below 100 °C (212 °F). Molten salts are another type of ionic liquid.
Ionic liquids are sometimes called "designer solvents", as an ionic liquid be prepared with specific different cations and anions to produce liquids with specific chemical and physical properties.
The first room-temperature ionic liquid was ethylammonium nitrate.
