Meiji period

During the Meiji period (October 1868 to July 1912), art works, and the processes of creating them, were shaped by new Western influences as well as Japanese traditions. In the same period, the spread of Japanese art influenced American and European tastes and art production. Imperial patronage, government sponsorship, promotion to new audiences, and Western technology combined to bring about a period of Japanese artistic innovation. In the decorative arts, Japanese artists reached new levels of sophistication.
