In 1990, his family moved from Arnhem to Aruba, where he was an honor student at the International School of Aruba.
Van der Sloot was a football (soccer) and tennis athlete at the school, competed in doubles tennis with his father at the Moët & Chandon Anniversary Cup in 2005 and hoped to play for Saint Leo University.
