Megabyte

The megabyte (symbol: MB or Mo, also known as the megaoctet) is a unit used when talking about hard drives or computer memory. One megabyte is 1 million bytes or 1 thousand kilobytes.

On December 1998, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) first defined the mebibyte (shortened as MiB) as 220, or 1,048,576 bytes, which also amounts to 1024 kibibytes (shortened as KiB).

Casual computer users still often use the megabyte to mean the mebibyte. Microsoft Windows also still uses the term megabyte in their file explorer when they mean the mebibyte.

One thousand megabytes make one gigabyte.

This definition is part of the International System of Quantities.
