Mette-Marit (born Mette-Marit Tjessem Høiby; 19 August 1973) is the Queen of Norway as the wife of King Haakon VIII.
The couple have two children, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus. Mette‑Marit also has an older son, Marius Borg Høiby.
She was a controversial figure at the time of her engagement to Haakon in 2000. She became crown princess of Norway upon her marriage in 2001. In this role, she has championed humanitarian projects and arts, as well as taking part in official visits at home and abroad.
Mette-Marit had contact with the American convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein between 2011 and 2014. At the time she became friends with Epstein, Norwegian media had identified him as a "convicted pedophile". In 2019, Norwegian and international media reported that she met him several times between 2011 and 2013; at that time, he had been released from prison after his 2008 conviction for sex offences involving minors.
After the death of King Harald V on 28 August 2026 and the accession of her husband as King Haakon VIII, Mette-Marit became Norway's queen consort.
In October 2018 she was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, which will limit her official programs. In June 2026, it was announced that Mette‑Marit needed a lung transplant.
