Nancy Josephine Kassebaum Baker (née Landon; July 29, 1932 – August 21, 2026) was an American politician. She represented Kansas in the United States Senate from 1978 to 1997. She was a member of the Republican Party.
Kassebaum was the daughter of Alf Landon, who was Governor of Kansas from 1933 to 1937 and the 1936 Republican nominee for president.
Kassebaum was known for her bipartisanship.
Kassebaum was married to former Senator and diplomat Howard Baker. She was the first woman ever elected to a full term in the Senate without her husband having previously served in Congress.
She was a critic of President Donald Trump. In 2018, she supported Laura Kelly, the Democratic candidate and eventual winner, for Governor of Kansas in the 2018 election. She also supported Kelly's successful reelection in 2022. Kassebaum also supported Republican-turned-Democrat Barbara Bollier for U.S. Senator in the 2020 election over her Republican nominee U.S. Representative Roger Marshall.
In 2014, Kassebaum said she supported same-sex marriage. In 2024, she supported Vice President Kamala Harris for president over Trump.
Kassebaum died on August 21, 2026 in hospice care in Manhattan, Kansas at the age of 94.
