Operation Achse, was the code name for the Disarmament of Italian troops in North Italy and the Balkan region during the Italian campaign of World War II by German-Axis troops.
In early September 1943, the Kingdom of Italy (that had recently deposed Benito Mussolini as prime minister) surrendered to the Western Allied Powers due to how bad the war was going for the country. Not long after, German leader Adolf Hitler ordered Wehrmacht troops to invade the country to prevent Italian forces turning on other axis forces and to prevent the allies from gaining a foothold in the area. In a few days the German army managed to free Mussolini from captivity and held a lot of Italian territory. Italian forces in the Balkans were also disarmed with Italian held territory in Yugoslavia and Greece being given to Axis puppet states and a puppet government being installed in Albania. After the operation ended, the Italian Social Republic was established with Mussolini as the leader of the puppet state.
