Organosilicon chemistry

Organosilicon chemistry is the scientific study of organosilicon compounds, a type of chemical compound where silicon atoms are connected to carbon atoms. Silicon has similar chemistry to carbon because they are both in the same group, and many organosilicon compounds are similar to those made with just carbon.

The 1904 discovery of silicone by Frederic Kipping made organosilicon chemistry an important part of the rubber and lubricant industries. Millions of tonnes of silicone rubber (usually polydimethylsiloxane) are made every year.
