The oud Arabic: عود is a pear-shaped, stringed instrument. It is similar to a modern western lute. It does not have frets. It is commonly used in Middle Eastern music and East African music. The oud has a short neck and a rounded back made from thin strips of wood. It developed from an older instrument called the barbat. The oud spread across the Middle East and North Africa, and instruments related to it later developed in Europe and East Asia.
