Panchala

The Panchala kingdom was an ancient Indian Janapada (c. 1100–500 BCE) located in the Ganges-Yamuna Doab of present-day Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It was divided into North Panchala (capital: Ahichhatra) and South Panchala (capital: Kampilya) by the Ganges. Famous in the Mahabharata as King Drupada’s realm, it was a close ally of the Kurus.

During the Roman era (approximately 2nd century BCE to 4th century CE), the Panchala kingdom was a sovereign, prosperous, and independent state in northern India, thriving as a local power after the collapse of the Mauryan Empire and before its final annexation by the Gupta Empire.
