Piracicaba (Portuguese pronunciation: [piɾɐsiˈkabɐ] or [piˌɾasiˈkabɐ]) is an Brazilian city in the state of São Paulo. In 2022, 423,323 people lived here. Its area is 1,378.07 km².
The city is an important and traditional producer of sugarcane.
The name of the city comes from a Tupi–Guarani dialect and means "place where the fish stops". It refers to the large waterfalls of the Piracicaba River, which prevent fish from moving upstream during their migration.
According to João Mendes de Almeida, the name Piracicaba comes from Pihá-ci-quâ-bo, meaning "step by step, with blows". It is formed from pihá, meaning "step" or "stair", ci, a distributive particle, quâ, meaning "blow", and bo, a shortened form. The name refers to the way the waters of the Piracicaba River fall over a series of cascades.
