SCP-173

SCP-173 in the game SCP: Secret Laboratory

SCP-173 is a fictional character in the SCP Foundation universe. Nicknamed the Sculpture, the creature is described as a large statue made of concrete and rebar and only moves when someone does not look at it and kills that person by snapping their neck. Originated from a 2007 4chan with a picture of a statue made by Izumi Katō, it quickly evolved and eventually leading to the creation of the SCP Foundation Wiki and fandom. It is by far the most popular and recognizable character in the SCP universe.

The original 4chan image was uploaded by Wesley "Moto42" Williams, which is Izumi Katō's Untitled 2004 work. Katō allowed the use of his image but for non-commerical purposes only, a warning was put in the SCP-173 wiki. But due to the violation of the Creative Commons licenses and many people made money from the image, which Katō found disliked. The image, alongside the warning, was removed from the SCP Wiki in 2022 and Moto42 requested that everyone could imagine their own imagination of the SCP. Since then, numerous depictions of SCP-173 were made, even the Wikidot has a page for it, hilariously referred it as the "Peanut Gallery".

The popularity of SCP-173 has inspired various fictional characters and works. Many games, videos, arts and memes have featured SCP-173. It is believed that SCP-173 was inspired by the Weeping Angels from the Doctor Who series.
