The Saffarids or the Saffarid dynasty (Template:سلسله صفاریان) was one of the first Post Islamic Iranian dynasties. The Saffarid dynasty was born in Zaranj, Today's Afghanistan. They ruled in Sistan from 861–1002. Sistan was a historical region in southeastern Iran, southwestern Afghanistan and northwestern Pakistan. The Saffarid dynasty was led by Yaqub ibn Layth saffar who has worked as a coppersmith (Arabic: ṣaffār, hence the dynasty's name).

Using his ties and relations to the various Afghan Tribes, he became a warlord and formed a disciplined army of volunteers and mercenaries.

He Captured Sistan and expanded rapidly, taking Khorasan, Kerman, Fars, Sindh, Makran, and parts of Baluchistan.

The Saffarid Set the stage for later Iranian dynasties like:

Ghaznavids (Afghanistan - based empire)

Samanids ( Uzbekistan - based empire

Buyids ( Iran - Iraq - based empire
