The sexual revolution or sexual liberation is the name for a number of movements within western society, most prominently in the United States, during the 1950s to the 1970s that challenged the traditional codes of behavior and morality regarding human sexuality. Sexual subjects that had a negative stigma were no longer seen as taboo, and people started to talk about these subjects more openly. As a result of the sexual liberation, the door was also opened for more open discussions regarding gender identity, sexual abnormality, public nudity, pornography, premarital sex, masturbation, abortion, and the legalization of birth control.
There were several books and studies that triggered this. One of them was The Sexual Revolution, by the Austrian Wilhelm Reich, published in English translation in 1945. Another one is known as the Kinsey Reports. They were published by the American Alfred Kinsey, in the early 1950s.
