Sides of an equation

In mathematics, the sides of an equation (like left-hand side or right-hand side) are everything on the left or right side of the equal sign. The two sides have the same value because equality is symmetric but it can be shown differently.

Example

In the equation, x + 5 is the left-hand side and y + 8 is the right-hand side.
